    Hi all,

PC running fine, then I boot up and it takes forever, I keep getting the little cd icon appearing next to my cursor, flashing on and off. Then, eventually, the desktop appears and cursor moves fine but it takes ages to open programs, and control panel etc.

I did have some trouble with new software - it is NOKIA PC Suite software to connect phone to pc - caused crashes and serious error, so I have uninstalled and gone back to a restore point prior to its installation.

Cleaned for malware and virus and made sure no new processes start at boot up...

However, still getting this issue - there are no lights coming on on the cd drives and no disks in them, yet the icon keeps flashing and im getting performance issues.

    Any ideas?

Try the all the standard "Weeding Out" options such as Safe Mode booting and trimming the startups items. Perhaps the uninstall of the Nokia left some call command behind so look for anything that may refer to that.

If nothing there points to the problem, did this Nokia Suite involve any USB port? If so, try uninstalling all the various USB ports and letting XP detect and reinstall them.

    Check your Reg key at:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices

and see if some strange device is listed.

    Hi again,

Well there are no unusual items in start up (mscofig) only the few I always have.

There was un unknown device under USB in device manager so I uninstalled that but still get the problem, the cd icon still flashes on and off at the cursor and extremely slow boot up.

I have checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices and there are a lot of things there but I have no idea what the lines mean

When you say "try uninstalling all the various USB ports and letting XP detect and reinstall them. "

Do you mean the list under Universal Serial Bus Controllers in Device Manager - they all refer to USB...?

    Thanks Again.

Yes, you'll have to right-click > uninstall them one at a time and when the last one is deleted the parent directory will also be gone. Then click Action > Scan for Hardware changes and it will detect and install the ports anew.

If no joy, uninstall and reinstall your CD drive the same way.
