Error starting PC: "hal.dll is missing or corrupt"

Troops:

When my system is booting up it delivers a message:

WINDOWS could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt.
<WINDOWS root>\system32\hll.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Now if the system does not boot up how do I re-install a copy of the file???.
In my sweaty hands I hold a floppy disk with the hll.dll on it. (Taken from another system.)

The computer in question has two operating systems installed. Win98 and WinXP. At boot time I can select the desired OS. If I put the XP boot disk in can I use the disk to install the hll.dll file?

It comes down to this. OK. How do I install that necessary file?

Are you sure it is hll.dll and not hal.dll? A problem with hal.dll being missing or corrupt is common and fixable if you have your XP CD. hll.dll is a possible sign of a Brazilian banking trojan.

The error message WINDOWS could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. <WINDOWS root>\system32\hll.dll is one of the general purpose error messages that Windows programmers have elected to use to cover a wide variety of situations. It hardly ever is generated because the single file named hal.dll is missing. The most common causes are:

1.. The boot.ini file system load line is pointing to the wrong location for Windows.

2. The drive has errors and you need to run chkdsk /r from the Repair console or else use a BartPE disk to "fix" drive errors.

3. The Windows system is missing hal.dll and likely several other files, maybe ALL files, and merely replacing the hal.dll will not help at all.

4. The hal.dll file alone is actually missing and only need to be replaced with a copy from your backup or from the install CD. This is actually the least likely scenario from my experience.

 

Well it looks like this hal.dll is not a simple affair so outcomes my backup and I'll reload the whole furshlugeneh thing.
