I've been told by Netgear that the reason I cannot install their network adapter is because of my system. How do I copy my C partition to another drive so that I can re-install xp and if I still CANNOT do that adapter install, I can copy the partition back and avoid all the software installing that goes with a re-install of XP.
I know that there are some apps that make a system copy but don't which is the most reliable for my purpose

If it does work as hoped, I will then make a copy of the new system to bypass the CD installation the next time

Instead of copying Windows back n forth, why not just take the current drive out and install a different one to test....

But, Acronis True Image and Norton Ghost are the two popular imaging programs.

Also, you could try a repair install instead...

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

This would leave your apps installed...

That sounds like a cop out to me. Consider trying some other manufacturers router.

First however, be certain that you have not disabled some necessary service that is required for this gear to install properly. If you have disabled ANY services EVER, turn them ALL back on and retry the install.

If in doubt, go to Start > Run > (type) services.msc (enter) and set anything that is now shown as Disabled to Automatic.

Unfortunately, the mfg install disk will not let me do any kind of install that doesn't kill my registry and all the installation data:mad:

I use an external 300G hard drive. Could I partition that and put the system on that other partition instead of removing the drive?

If that worked, I would not mind reinstall XP on the C: even if I had to re-install apps. BUT if it didnt work, how would I get the system to boot again on the original C: drive
