I pulled the PC apart and checked connection, on re booting the F drive was there!!

Did you want me to delete those lines using hijack this?

Never used a proxy.....though I did use a ip hider, which may be what those proxy lines are referring to. I dont use it any more, shall i remove them?

    Thanks :)

    That's great! :)

Yes, fix all 3 of those lines with HijackThis. Make sure you close ALL other windows first. If your internet does not connect afterwards, open HJT to the Misc Tools section, click Backups, locate the 2 proxy entries and restore them.

When you're done, reboot. If everything is working as it should, clear your system restore points as follows. Right click My Computer and select properties. Click the System Restore tab, then check the box to turn System Restore off. OK your way out of the properties dialog. Now go back and uncheck the box so that system restore is again enabled.
Verify a new restore point was set ......... click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. Select 'Restore my computer to an earlier time' and click next. It should show a system checkpoint from minutes before. If not, click back and select 'Create a restore point', then click next and follow the prompts.

Next, I recommend you head straight to Windows Update and get everything available. Your comp is WAY behind. It will take quite a few trips back there and multiple reboots to get caught up. I'm sure Geri will post back with some further recommendations for protecting your computer as well.

    Hi tws

Thanks noahdfear, Connections:cool: Do I feel dumb or what:rolleyes:
OH Well, It's good to have friends:D

    OK, tws

Follow all of noahdfear's instructions. You need to get your machine up to SP2 and as he said it will take quite a few Windows updates to do it.

Along with the clearing restore points you should also delete all your temp files. Here is a program that does a good job.

    Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
      Under Main choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - A powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.

    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

    4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

    5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 23,000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all,
and MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

    6. Install WinPatrol to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine

Now just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly.

    7. Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

    8. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only, Cleans out temporary files all the garbage you collect while surfing the web.

    9. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

    10. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    11. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Ok will do. Had a storm here last night so my home connection to the net may still be down when I get home

Ok, the reason I havnt updated windows is because I only have a gig left on my HD. Its a 7 gig hard drive. F drive is a 10.

I have tried to clean it up in space by removing programs I dont use and cleaning up disk space. Will the updates use much room?

    Major probs.

    PC wont boot up.

Just keeps doing a scan disk and then rebooting.

Making a xp start up floppy today at work, see if that helps.

    Any ideas??!

Is it by chance checking the F drive? If so, try disconnecting it (both power and ribbon cable) and see if boot is successful.

Reseat ribbon cables on both drives.

    If it's checking the C drive and the above doesn't help;
Does it run all the way through scandisk?
    Does it report anything fixed?
When it first notifies you that scandisk will run, can you cancel it and boot past it?

Before this no boot problem you mentioned a severe thunderstorm.

Has the computer worked since the storm?

Did the storm cause a powerdown or reboot?

Was the computer on during this?

Even if not on, a surge could still cause problems.
