Find error codes associated with the failing update (928365) in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post error codes here.

After the update failed AGAIN. I requested the steps needed to correct that problem from Microsoft Update solutions? I ended up downloading two other KP #'s and then the KB928365 installed properly. loonychoons Here are the two updates to follow, I do realize that the Window Defender update had nothing to do with the problem update.--------------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365) July 12, 2007 Microsoft Update
Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB922770) July 12, 2007 Microsoft Update
Windows Defender Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.20.2737.3) July 12, 2007 Microsoft Update

    Thanks, loonychoons!

In case other people with the same or similar problem read this thread, one might search for KB922770 and KB928365 (and KB915597 if one uses Windows Defender) at the Microsoft Download Center.

Here are direct links to the Microsoft Download Center download pages for the .NET 2.0 updates loonychoons apparently installed.
    • KB922770 .NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL Security Update
Released Oct. 10, 2006. (I assume KB922770 must be installed before KB928365 will install properly.)
    • KB928365 .NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL and MSCOREE.DLL Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
      Released Jul. 10, 2007.

    Mailman:

At least that is what I was required to do, however I have had many many downloads problems and/or installations problems on all the .Net Framework " Updates whatever the version #" Right from number one.

Microsoft had me deleting all the .NET Framework Program Versions? Many times. They then had me download & install clean up programs that they sent me the LINK for,I also have a number of Posts on this system explaining them.

So I may not have had that update KB922770 .NET Framework 2.0 SYSTEM.WEB.DLL Security Update
Released Oct. 10, 2006? as I may have removed it when Microsoft had me play Musical chairs with those .NET Framework updates in the past??

You would think that if I had Version 3.0 or higher it would take the place of any lower version.

Thanks for your help and everyone be good loonychoons

I just did a search for {.NET Framework} at this site !! It looks to me like many Persons have had similar PROBLEMS with .NET Framework updates -downloads-& installs now and in the past???

Thanks for your additional details. I think you have taken care of my curiosity about why you did not already have the Oct. 10, 2006 patch installed anyway. ;)

I would normally think so. However, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the .NET Framework versions are not cumulative/backward compatible. Depending on one's needs, a person may have one, two, or all three versions installed. I have only .NET Framework v1.1 installed and I'm not sure even that is necessary for me. Until I run into a situation where I need to install other .NET Framework versions, I'm leaving them off my computer. :)

The only .NET Framework-related July "Patch Tuesday" hotfix I was offered for my computer was KB928366 for v1.1 and, according to Belarc Advisor, it is properly installed as "M928366 ").

    Good luck!

BTW, Microsoft's .NET Frameworks are not related to the "New.Net" (a.k.a. "NewDotNet ") adware/potentially unwanted software (PUS) as far as I know. I just wanted to state this in case someone may be confused regarding the .NET terminology (even though one might arguably consider Microsoft's .NET Frameworks as PUS). ;)

EDIT: Belarc released their post-July "Patch Tuesday" definitions today for Belarc Advisor.

folks - i myself had this problem but after the second time with the problem i just did a custom install and told it not to bother me again.

my question here is that this problem is widespread. have all of a sudden had a number of clients emailing me with same problem. so obviously is a m.s. update problem. do you not think m.s. will fix in the next update ??? honestly why should we have to jump through hoops to fix a m.s. ***** up. im a m.s. fan and certified but honestly how the heck am i suppose to walk a couple hundred clients through the so called fixes i see posted.

m.s. has to be aware of problem by now or am i living in a idealistic world. will they fix automatically or do i need a plan to assist all my clients when they have the same problem ???

    Hi, gghartman. :)

In case you need a plan to assist your clients, loonychoons apparently fixed his issue related to these .NET notfixes :p as reported in post #6 above and after.

Therefore, the information above may be helpful to you in case MS doesn't release a patch for their patch soon. ;)

i checked my system to see if i had the 2 .net updates both dated 7-12-07 and i do not so i wonder because i did a custom and told it not to bother me anymore if i need to reverse that first.

not worried about the defender update cuz i dont use it anyway. not to much good said about that protection as of yet.

I am also having trouble installing this update for .NET Framework. I don't get any error codes or anything, but when I turn on the computer again the next day, the update is there again for me to install. I must confess that I don't even understand what this .NET Framework thing is. I did a search on my computer and it appears I may have version 1.0? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I won't be insulted by real simple instructions, as I'm pretty clueless about this.

Hi, Bucksone. :) Since loonychoons already apparently solved his issue, I guess it's OK to assist someone else under his thread topic. :) (Otherwise a moderator might split this thread.)

    1. Please click Start > Run
    2. Type or paste %windir%\windowsupdate.log in the "Open:" field.
    3. Click the OK button.
This will open windowsupdate.log in Notepad.
    4. Scroll to near the end of the file for the log of the most recent KBxxxxxx update attempts.
Please post all relevant error codes to these possibly failed updates here.

Thanks! That is what I was looking for. There aren't any error codes though.

Keep in mind I am not an expert with interpreting these logs or with understanding how Windows updates work.
It appears (to me) you have successfully downloaded KB928367 but you have not actually installed it. Is your Automatic Updates set to automatically install updates after download or do you have it configured to let you decide when to install?

If you did install KB928367, then I expect you should also be able to find a corresponding KB928367.log file in your WINDOWS folder (which can be opened in Notepad for inspection).

If you cannot successfully install KB928367 via the yellow shield in your System Tray, then perhaps a manual KB928367 download and subsequent install (by executing the NDP1.0sp3-KB928367-X86-Enu.exe file) will solve your issue.

Problems with these latest .NET Frameworks updates are widespread so don't hold your breath. My suggestions might not work.

Please let us know how you fare.
