Ok, 1st thanks for any help you can give me.

My skills are only as good as i have encountered issues with in the past, and this is a new area for me.

On boot I get numerous Blue Screens, my most recent ones are.

(sorry i didn't write the top numbers down)

    Kmode_exception_not_handled

    Address 80065374 base at 80062000 datestamp 3e7a7338 hal.dll
    Address 80471900 base at 80400000 datestamp 45ec3c8f ntoskrnl.exe

    on restart i got

    Diver_IRQL_not _less_or _equal

    Address F16880CC2 base at F1680000 datestamp 3e5bb66c PCIIDEX.sys

what have i done so far. well as usual i seem to have caused more harm by trying to uninstall IE and reinstall from scratch.

I have installed the HD recovery console and written down all by system and boot items, though google has come up with nothing obvious.

i sometimes get crashes (reboot) at random times, more often i get frozen. i always need to restart at least once to boot up.

so it would seem you need more info, maybe my crash dump info? so what do i need to do to post the info you need?

    thanks again

Have you recently installed or uninstalled any hardware? Are there any errors in device manager? The error could be caused by a bad device driver or bad RAM. If you have more than one stick of memory try running with just one stick installed. Swap the sticks to see if one is bad.

    OK

new hardware, i don't think so (though i may have a while back). i uninstalled AVG (using add/remove) yesterday as the trial had expired after "updating" from Ewido.

there was a error with the monitor in the device manager, but i just check for changes and it went away.

i doubt it's the RAM, imine is very slow, and i'm pretty sure there is only one in there (though i would have to check). it seems very likely to be a software thing.

as a side note, after using a third party software to remove 90% of IE (i know, i know). which failed. i then tried to reinstall my IE 6, but that didn't work and i had to install IE 5 from my Windows CD. i still haven't updated it. now all my folders are 1 plane (ie; they have no information box on the left hand side, and device manager just has the devices with no drop down menu on the left. The My Pictures folder is all in HTML script with no icons at all, though the other folders are fine (have icons).

and i am unable to automatically or manually update windows. the auto says i have .... ready to download and when i click download it just closes at 0%. when i use their website it tries to install, and says

    ....failed
    ...failed
    ....failed
    ...failed
    ....failed

    hope this helps

Sounds like you may need to do a repair or fresh install of Win2K. Slave your hard drive in another computer and transfer any data you need to keep then place the hard drive back into your PC before attempting either.

ok so that sounds promising, i'll try the repair.

    questions i have long wondered.

if i repair (or even re install) windows, will i lose all the info on my hard drive? slaving my drive into another comp sounds like a big pain as the last time i slaved a drive with no anti-static gloves, my computer made static on my tv reception for about a month  .

when you say transfer any data i need, is that files (like movies and pics) i want to keep, or things that are necessary for the repair (windows files). if windows files, what would i need, i would assume it is all on the windows cd. i suppose geting all the updates would be nice, but i'm sure i don't need all of them as later ones i assume cover things from earlier ones. if i just repair and try ms update, then i assume i wont get conflict with different packs and updates..

as for the problem, it may have been started by installing the latest sunjava at their request, but on later inspection (not from them) i see i should have uninstalled previous java packs first. i didn't. i then uninstalled all of them after finding this out and tried the latest one again. didn't seem to fix anything. i wish companies would tell you these things before they tell you to update.

I don't see how slaving a drive could cause static on a TV. I swap multiple drives in my PC quite regularly without issue. I don't use an anti-static device when handling drives either.

The files to transfer would be your personal data such as documents, movies, music, pictures and etc. Supposedly the repair install won't damage personal files, but I would never bet the bank on it.

After repairing or reinstalling Win2K make sure you install a firewall and enable it before connecting to the Internet. Download and install SP4 after that. There will also be numerous updates that came out after SP4.

    thanks

i have a small 20Gb hard drive that is my primary drive with all my program files and windows stuff on it, and another i bought later (80Gb) that all my ducuments are on. i assume that if i can unplug my slave drive and plug it into another comp and the stuff is still on there, that i can simply unplug it before the repair and plug it in again after. is there a period of time i have before the hard drive once removed, goes blank, or is it indefinite?

Just unplug the slave drive with all of your documents on it then run the repair on the master drive. Data doesn't disappear from a hard drive due to it being unplugged. I have drives that have sat for over 4 years and the data was still accessable.

OK i finally got around to doing this.

It got halfway through the repair and a blue screen came up.

tried again got a bit further and the same.

now i cant even get passed the starting up bar, i get the blue screen, cannot load ky.sys

is there some way i can reinstall windows from the cd without having to fully start up (though bios, troubleshooting or something)

there is still some stuff on ther drive i would like to keep so another way would be better, but if this is the only thing i can do, so be it.

    thanks again

hi - you only loose data if you re-format your drive. If you re-install windows you will probably loose the settings for those applications you have installed! But - you should do a repair of the installation - not the first one offered by the installer when you boot up on the installCD but in reparing Windows you get a second chance to do a repair just before the installer ask you to reformat the partition on which you have installed windows - you have several options there if the filesystem is in good shape - repair the system - format the drive and install or just install leaving the rest of the filesystem intact - and the repair from here is more or less a re-install of the windows operating system but keeping user and application settings - which will solve many of these BSOD which not is caused by faulty hw.
    best regards /ti

i cannot get onto my comp properly

when i go to startup it stalls at the sartup bar (the windows screen)

how do i run repair from the cd without starting up?

the rapir i did in the past stalled so i will more than likely need to something more drastic, like loading all setting from the cd rather than updating.

OK i bought some more time.

as i said before, i cannot get into the comp.

when i boot from cd it does just that, boots. i don't get any options to do anything else (like repair, partition etc etc.) it then stalls at the windows startup screen.

I have recovery console setup on my disc, so i can get into that, and i can get into the bios.

how do i get into the cd to select the setup options? i can't find that option. bios is for my comp not windows, and i have no experience with recovery console. can i choose the "setup" option from there? i didn't want to cause more harm.

when i ran the repair the first time i got a blue screen and had to restart. i can only say the reason for this is that all of the files needed to startup were not fully loaded/registered when the repair took place.

i had to go onto the cd by accessing the drive the last time, and agreeing to the repair and contract from there befotre it restarted and repaired, it did not give me any options for this just because i loaded the cd and booted, i had to do it manually.

i need to reinstall windows, i don't care if i loose my settings, that doesn't matter. my c/d drive was partitioned, i can leave that the same in the hope that i may stil have the info that was on there.

so how do i setup windows from the cd without being prompted and without being able to fully start up?

    OK

I would really like some help on this as I am at my wits end.

I managed to sort out the Windows install, after much trouble with that. I reinstalled windows 2000.

    I still got bluescreens.

I bought a new hard drive, and installed a fresh windows.

    I still got blue screens.

So i figured it was the motherboard.

I had alot of trouble with my floppy drive (that i needed to reflash). but after buying a new one and a new 32 pin fdd cable, i managed to write the boot disk with the flash on it and reflash.

    I still get blue screens.

My question would be, is this likely to be a windows 2000 issue? as far as i can remember i didn't get the bluescreens before i added service pack 4 after the reinstall.

I doesn't seem to be the motherboard (although there may still be a driver issue), it's not the hard drive. My device manager says all is well.

what the hell am i missing.

    please help.

    thanks

Without knowing the error codes we have no clue at all what causes your problems.

Check your event logs, and see what errors are listed.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

    Yea, looks like a mess...

    1st (probably not important):
As for the dump files, follow these instructions to post a Dump Data Log.

It does sound like a hardware problem though.

    ------------------

NOTE: This is a hardware error. This error was reported by the CPU
via Interrupt 18. This analysis will provide more information about
the specific error. Please contact the manufacturer for additional
information about this error and troubleshooting assistance.

This error is documented in the following publication:

VAL - MCi_STATUS register is valid
Indicates that the information contained within the IA32_MCi_STATUS
register is valid. When this flag is set, the processor follows the
rules given for the OVER flag in the IA32_MCi_STATUS register when
overwriting previously valid entries. The processor sets the VAL
flag and software is responsible for clearing it.

    OVER - Error Overflow
Indicates that a machine check error occurred while the results of a
previous error were still in the error-reporting register bank (that
is, the VAL bit was already set in the IA32_MCi_STATUS register).
the processor sets the OVER flag and software is responsible for
clearing it. Enabled errors are written over disabled errors, and
uncorrected errors are written over corrected errors. Uncorrected
errors are not written over previous valid uncorrected errors.

    UC - Error Uncorrected
Indicates that the processor did not or was not able to correct the
error condition. When clear, this flag indicates that the processor
was able to correct the error condition.

    EN - Error Enabled
Indicates that the error was enabled by the associated EEj bit of the
    IA32_MCi_CTL register.

    PCC - Processor Context Corrupt
Indicates that the state of the processor might have been corrupted
by the error condition detected and that reliable restarting of the
    processor may not be possible.

MEMHIRERR - Memory Hierarchy Error {TT}CACHE{LL}_{RRRR}_ERR
These errors match the format 0000 0001 RRRR TTLL

    Concatenated Error Code:
    --------------------------
    _VAL_OVER_UC_EN_PCC_MEMHIRERR_15

This error code can be reported back to the manufacturer.
They may be able to provide additional information based upon
this error. All questions regarding STOP 0x9C should be
    directed to the hardware manufacturer.
