I realize that this is going to be a really dumb question but here goes.

Today they finally completed my DSL outside repair and I now have DSL.

I don't have a problem with Firefox but how in the world do I continue to use Thunderbird since it is configured for my dial-up provider?

Is this something a DSL tech should be able to tell me or am I supposed to figure it out for myself or better have you folks figure it out for me?

    HELP.

    Ramona,

I will check out the link you suggested but for the most part I think I've made some progress.

It seems AT&T doesn't support Thunderbird, but the rep said he would help me anyway. I fond the settings I needed to change the server settings. What a mess that was for a while but now I have the ordeal of redirecting my emails.

I think I have to change it here also?

Right now I'm able to check my old email account on the web.

Not so sure about the DSL right now.

I cant' believe how everyone pushed IE and Outlook.

You know, when Cox went solo, after having been with @home.com, They sent a questionnaire, asking what users would want, although they would support only IE and OE. I asked to let me take care of things, and that I would check OE and IE if necessary. I got complete freedom, and have had no problem. And, they started supporting Firefox and Thunderbird, to boot, about one year ago.
I did find a few techs who were willing to take a chance outside the norm, but most techs out there are non-Microsoft illiterate.

The link contained the settings for your incoming/outgoing mail.

By redirecting your mail, does that mean you are still subscribing to dialup? What you can do in TB, is elect to leave the mail on the server, until your subscription runs out. If there are messages you want to keep, then you can forward to your new ATT account.

Yes, for this site you will need to edit:
User CP | Settings & Options | Edit Email & Password.
You will need to do this on any BBS or other site, where you are a member.

It isquite irritating when our Gecko browsers aren't supported by an ISP. I'm quite surprised to hear ATT doesn't support TB! They do support Netscape, and I have received some very good help on their Newsgroups, which are moderated by ATT Tech's. If you have a question, then go to the Netscape/Seamonkey support sites. The Mail setup is identical....

DSL is finally up and running but have still have issues. The tech that helped me today on an IE issue (wouldn't open at all) broke down and told me HE used Firefox.

I have two computers and am keeping the XP one downstairs armed with dialup. Just in case. I had to disable all other network connections on this one.

I thought I was going to have a big mess advising friends of the change on the new address. But that worked out great until I ran into the Address Book problem. I am going to work on that right now.

Westside gave me some "clues "

I also have been checking my dialup provider on the Interent web site trying to catch folks or businesses I missed.

Between a new computer, Vista, different browser, email client and now DSL, I've just about had it.

Thanks so much for your patience and time.

My response to Vista was to renew my service contract at Best Buy for three more years. At this point, it seems like the biggest pain. Ironically, my ISP has not quite supported Vista, yet.
By the way, I was given a definition of "support ". It does not mean that the ISP prevents you from using gecko browsers, unless they have only a dedicated program to get online (but this is very rare). It means that you cannot count on the tech support to help, because they have not received enough training.
    You are on your own.

    con't TB and ATT DSL?

    AT&T High Speed Internet

Time is running out "” update your email settings to help us serve you better.

    Dear AT&T Yahoo! Member,

We recently contacted you about some important security improvements we're making to your AT&T Yahoo! service. These changes will affect members who send or receive email from a desktop or mobile client program, such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Eudora, Apple Mail, or Thunderbird.

To help us ensure the security of your email, you will need to change the settings on your desktop or mobile email client program. Please choose one of the three options:

Make the Changes Automatically: To automatically make the required changes to Outlook Express only, use the AT&T Yahoo! Email Auto-Configuration Tool or the AT&T Self Support Tool.

    * The AT&T Yahoo! Email Auto-Configuration Tool will automatically change your email settings. The tool can be downloaded from AT&T Yahoo! Help site and follow the installation instructions.

    * If you already have the AT&T Self Support Tool installed on your computer, simply select Cannot send/receive email from the Self Support Tool Main Interface to run an email settings check. When prompted to change your email settings, select Yes. NOTE: This will only provide changes to Outlook Express.
o If you do not have the AT&T Self Support Tool installed, download it and then follow the instructions above.

Make the Changes Manually: To manually make the required setting changes in Outlook, Outlook Express and other email applications, please view the detailed instructions here.

Alternatively, you may take the following steps to change the settings on your desktop or mobile email client program:

    1. Open your email client program.
    2. Locate the email account settings for your particular client.
    3. Change the POP server to pop.att.yahoo.com.
    4. Change the SMTP server to smtp.att.yahoo.com.
    5. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.
    6. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.
    7. Confirm the above settings then click OK.

The web-based version of AT&T Yahoo! Mail is not affected by these changes and will continue to be available at http://mail.yahoo.com.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Once these security enhancement are fully implemented only SSL compatible email clients will be able to access client email (POP/SMTP). Some older email client versions may not support SSL. Please go to the AT&T Yahoo! Help site located here to determine if your email client supports SSL and to see if updates or patches are available to support SSL. If your email client does not support SSL it will be necessary for you to upgrade your email client in order to use client email. As always, all customers are welcome to utilize the web-based version of AT&T Yahoo! Mail available at http://mail.yahoo.com.

    Thanks for your cooperation.

    Sincerely,
    AT&T Yahoo! Customer Care

    Hello - All,
In response to this post - ATT is sending me this the above e-mail re: these settings!!!! They WILL NOT work for me in TB!
I went through H*** with a tech trying to get them to work....ATT will not support TB or any Mozilla products, at least in Texas!!!
I finally went back to my original settings and all works fine....Why is ATT doing this to us? They say for security reasons!!! Bull!!!! They couldn't care less about security, accept for their own servers...
Ramona, any suggestions why these settings ATT sent, will not work in TB??
And, is this going to be mandatory from ATT? Will I be forced to view my email from the web , and unable to store in on my system? Lousy business practices from another monopoly!@!

    John,
the second link is no help, since I would have to enter the address.
Where is the problem in TB. Receiving or sending, or both?
If you have the correct port, and they require authentication, you may have to select SSL. The port to send mail authenticated, will bring up the username, which you will have to enter. They claim that it is to reduce spam.
I have a friend in California, who has, I am pretty sure, the same situation. I will ask him to take a look at your post.

So, I'm not the only person that has problems with AT&T.

I finally have everything working pretty good for right now. I was beginning to settle down when today I discovered that I had no land line service. Thank goodness for cell phones. I called AT&T and after being on hold and run around voice mail I finally got a rep to report the problem.

She said that if the problem was inside there would be a charge. I was painting and didn't want anyone banging around in the house.

She gave me an option. Go outside and open the box on the side of the house, take a corded phone and plug it in the jack that was there. If there was no dial tone that meant the problem was outside. It was!!

So with corded phone, ***** driver and cell I went out in the 96 degree heat so find out that they probably messed it up when they worked on the DSL business.

    I hate AT&T!!

At least I learned something else I didn't know.

    John,

Did either of these settings change the Port:

    5. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the SMTP port to 465.

    6. Check the option labeled Use an encrypted connection (SSL) and change the POP3 port to 995.

Try the number 6. setting, which should automatically change the port to 995.
    Don't enable: Use secure authentication

I use two ISP's, and ATT is one of them. I use the SSL setting for the ATT Account with Port 995, and it works perfectly in Thunderbird.

This is what my friend said, but did not give the port numbers:
He confirmed the port numbers given by Ramona. As for Virus scanning, in AVG, I suggested that he tries to add the ports, 10465 for incoming, and 10995 for outgoing mail.

    Att & Dsl H***..

    =======================================================
    Hi-Ramona,
After most of the afternoon, with TWO att techs (and I use that sparingly...) Finally, a 2nd tier rep. said it was NOT mandatory to use SSL in TB.....They simply DO NOT know what to do!!!
When I change my settings as above - TB will not allow pass words, it completely breaks the connections. 2nd tier rep had me "clear" everything in IE's internet settings?? His understanding that the OS was blocking changes and over riding FF and TB?? IAE, that worked.
Since I'm behind a strong NAT router, running in "stealth" mode, I don't think I'll get any nasties? Hope!!!
    Thanks - All,,,

AVG virus scanning does not work with the ATT setup, I have been told.
Presumably only Norton and McAfee can do that, but it seems to be another case of incompetence.

    TB and DSL ATT SSL

    =======================================================
    Hi Ramona, and All,
Finally got TB to work, but now---in reading this thread, AVG FREE won't scan SSL mail!! That concerned me so I went to AVG and found out what to do!! Though, I'm afraid to try it, sounds VERY complicated !!!!! What do you think?===========================================
    677:
How to create servers for scanning e-mails - SSL communication

In some unique cases you have to create servers in the Personal e-mail scanner manually. The typical case is when you are using secure communication (SSL). In this case you have to create servers in the Personal e-mail scanner this way:

    (AVG Control Center->E-mail scanner->Properties->Personal e-mail scanner->Properties->Servers tab)

    * click on Add->Server type->POP3 - protocol for receiving e-mail messages->Connection->choose Fixed host on the right side of the screen and type here name of your original POP3 server->choose port number (5200 recommended)->enable the secure communication in the Connection dialogue and click on OK
    * click on Add->Server type->SMTP - protocol for sending e-mail messages->Connection->choose Fixed host on the right side of the screen and type here name of your original SMTP server->choose port number (5100 recommended)->enable the secure communication in the Connection dialogue and click on OK
    * Then you have to to set up the account in your e-mail client this way:
    * server for incomming e-mails: 127.0.0.1, port number as configured in the Personal e-mail scanner
    * server for outgoing e-mails: 127.0.0.1, port number as configured in the Personal e-mail scanner
    * disable secure communication in your client

It might help others that are more adventurous!!
    Thanks, John in Dallas.

    John,

That setup is similar to the old Norton AV email scanner, and it used to caused all sorts of problems.

Actually, it isn't necessary to even scan your email. As long as your Antivirus Auto-protect feature is enabled, that should be sufficient. FWIW, I haven't used email scanning in years.

    AVG SSL con't

    7/19/7 update!!!!
Well I tried the above AVG suggestions on my laptop, since I didn't care if I broke something, I don't get mail from it..
I couldn't get the smtp "thing" to work....Could get mail but not send??
I'll see if I missed something and continue to work on it.....
Hope someone tries and gets this to work. I really like AVG to scan incoming mail; main reason I use it..

    John,
a good friend of mine has ATT DSL, and the first thing he found out is that AVG, and other AV programs do not scan its mail.
And, of course, since ATT DSL requires authetication, you may be able to receive mail, and not send. It is the most common problem with authenticated mail. It makes things difficult for the honest user, and probably not do a thing to tame spam. You have to set up mail just like they say, and sending will work.
If you have more than one username, you will need as many SMTPs as you have usernames.

    Hi,

This may be a dumb question, but all the problems discussed herein only refer to AT&T DSL AND AT&T email accounts, correct? AT&T DSL does not interfere with any other e-mail account providers?

    TIA.

I can't think of any reason that DSL interferes. However, the problem may be with the programs which the DSL is allowed to use, but it is not a DSL problem, but rather an ISP issue.
