    Hi all.

I noticed today that my SATA drive is transfering at 1.5 gb and not the 3 gb that is supposed to. And Iam afraid I didn't set it up properly when I loaded windows onto it.
    Gigabyte MB GA-M61VME-S2
    supports 3 gb transfer rate.
Its a single SATA drive . When I plugged it into the MB. I booted off the seagate CD. I formatted and partioned it. Then I booted off the windows CD.

But, what got me was the screen that says" press F6 to install RAID drivers" I skipped that cause Iam using a single SATA drive and not in a RAID array. Should I have install the drivers at that point?

After windows loaded that is when I installed all the MB drivers and the such.

So, should I have installed the SATA drivers at that first prompt?

    Thanks foe any input
    Heath

What did you do to deterime this?
the 1.5 and 3 gig numbers are considered "max burst rate" that most people will never hit...

Unless your mobo has a SATA 2 controller a SATA 2 drive will transfer as SATA 1

Real world values from my drives - with SATA 2 controller .....

    Samsung 500Gb SATA 2

Theoretical 300 mbs (millions of bytes per second)
    Burst actual 148 mbs
    Sustained 85 mbs

    Hitachi 250 Gb SATA 1 & 120 Gb SATA 1

    Theoretical 150 mbs
    Burst actual 119 mbs
    Sustained 60 mbs

    Device Manager > IDE/ATAPI Controllers > SATA controller - right click > Properties > Primary/Secondary Channel > Speed test.

    MB is SATA 2 capable.
Does the SATA drive need to be SATA2 capable?
Did I have to load the drivers BEFORE I loaded the OS? You know when it said to press F6 for RAID drivers.

    My spec.
    Master drive.
    ST3400620AS
    SATA Generation 1- 1.5 gb
    Theoretical limit 1.5 gb
    burst 106mb
    sustained 77mb

my IDE/ATA controller is Nvidia MCP61 SATA controller.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Heath

Your drive ST3400620AS is certanly SATA 2, but check that there is not a jumper fitted which restricts the drive to SATA 1.
That does depend on the motherboard, but, as the drive is recognised the answer is no.

    Hi Pete

Thanks for getting back to me.

Iam 99% postive that I checked that before install and there were no jumpers, therefore making it 3gb.
I'll open up the case tomorrow and see if I can take a quick look.

    Any other ideas?

    Sorry for wasting your time.
