Hi, brand new here, I was referred by a member on another forum. this is my prob.
I'm forced to use IE at the moment but I like Netscape 7.2 browser. Used it happily since it was new. Then something happened?? that stopped it from working. If I remember right, I did a registry clean-up with CCLEANER and after that, all it would do is flash the Netscape logo for a half second, then nothing. I tried using the Ccleaner back-up but it would not work. I even tried a system restore but it didn't work. System Restore message said
"System restore could not be performed ". I un-installed 7.2 and re-installed it a couple times and each time it just did the same flash thing. Ah, you can tell by now that computers are my WEAK suit... Anyway, I tried 8.1 and didn't like it at all. I tried 7.1 but it seems very unstable, it freezes up if I go to a very animated site, then demands my password to continue,,, heck I never set up a password for it so I couldn't give it one.! Sooo, I ended up un-installing then re-installing 7.1 three times and, of course, losing all my bookmarks, history, etc.

Some of the suggestions I've gotten are to find NetScape in the program files and to delete it totally then try a re-install of 7.2,, and,, to follow a path in Documents and settings to "random characters" and delete it but neither exists or at least I can't find them..
OK, soo, does anyone have an idea why I'm unable to re-install 7.2 successfully??
My system is old,, 850Mhz CPU, 40g HD(half full), 256RAM, 300W ps.. I have spyblaster, Lavasoft AdAware, spybot search and destoy, CCleaner(don't registry cleaner anymore), and Avast Anti-Virus,, nothing seems to be plaguing me...
    Any other info is needed?
    Thank you so much

    Welcome to the Forum, Frisco!

    Frisco,

The problem most likely is caused by a missing entry for the C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE folder location in the user's registry. This is known as the "Installer Bug ".

You may experience this bug if you have reinstalled Netscape, experienced Registry problems, or have reinstalled Windows. This is especially evident with Windows XP users.

    This is what I suggest:

If you still have Netscape 7.1 installed, then uninstall the program, using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape
If you have plugins installed, then make a copy of the plugins folder first.

Delete the GRE folder located here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE

    REBOOT YOUR PC

    Install Netscape 7.2

Your Netscape Profile is located here, if you run Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

NOTE: These files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.
    ---

Once you locate your Profile and find your Mail folder, and preferences:
Open Netscape Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings

In the "Server Settings" for your mail account(s) scroll down to the
    "Local directory" field
Ensure that the path to your mail account folder is accurate, and if not:
Click on the "Browse" button on the right of the field, and point to the correct location

Let us know if you have further questions.

...or move to the SeaMonkey suite. It's practically identical to the old Netscape (which I also preferred) and will pick up your Netscape profile. The transition (for me, at least) was painless and any questions I had were covered very well on Ramona's excellent website. Just a thought.....

YaHOO, Yippe Ti yo Ti aye...

Thank you Ramona... Deleting the GRE thing is what did it...

I must have done a real good job deleting Netscape 7.2 and 7.1 awhile back cuz there was no Netscape to be found in Program files,,, but, I found the GRE, deleted it, followed your other instructions and WaLa, I was able to get a functioning 7.2 again...

And thanks to shotsi for the reply too...

Now I must go thank the member over at the C-Net forum for suggesting I ask you..!!

    Thanks again
