microsoft windows redirected hosts

While doing a spybot scan I get "Microsoft windows redirected host ". Spybot cannot fix this problem. When I try to go to Comcast home page I get the internet explorer cannot display this webpage. Various other web pages do the same thing. I have searched and am posting the hjt logfile but from there I am lost.

Moving this thread to the Spyware/Virus removal section.

Could you also post your Hosts file. It's located in:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Opens with Notepad and post the contents.

This may be a false positive, but you do report problems with web pages.

host file

I've tried to post the hosts file 3 times. When I attempt to copy the file here, the page locks up and My cpu usage goes to 100%. I'm trying to respond with this to see if I can post.

Try just renaming the Hosts file, just add a letter to the name, be sure to take the 'Read Only' off the properties first, and see if you have the same problem.

Sorry it took so long to reply, but here goes. I copied the file and saved with a different name and it still locks up, and I unchecked the read only box. My hosts file is literaly cramed with web sites that I have never visited. Mostly **** related. Can these be safely deleted? One of the thousands of web sites in this file must be causing this. I can post this reply after all.

A default HOSTS file should look like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost



The # entries are comments. The only entry that means anything is the 127.0.0.1 entry.

You can try deleting everything other than that line. If that line isn't there, you can create that line yourself: 127.0.0.1 followed by 7 spaces + localhost.


Or, if you have a i386 folder in Windows, there is a HOSTS file there and it will allow itself to be copied.

I think an explanation of the Hosts file is in order here.
Whenever your internet browser goes to a website, it first does a DNS (Domain Name Server) lookup, obtains the IP address of the site, then goes to that IP address, you still see the URL (http://www.whatever.com) in the address bar.
If the Hosts file exists, before the browser does a DNS lookup, it reads the Hosts file for the IP address instead. If the site is in the file, it uses the IP address on the same line as the site, if not it then does the DNS.
You may see something like this in the Hosts file
127.0.0.1 pornsite.com
127.0.0.1 www.pornsite.com
The Hosts file is telling the browser the site is at the IP address 127.0.0.1, which is actually your computer. Of course the site really isn't there, so the browser does a 'website not found', preventing the browser from going there. In this way it can protect you.

If the Host file has this line, you'll get to the Google webpage slightly faster, as the browser skips the DNS lookup.
64.233.179.99 www.google.com

Now here is where a "Microsoft windows redirected host" comes in. Note there is a different IP address here than above. It is actually the IP address of www.microsoft.com. So instead of your browser going to Google, you end up at the Microsoft page. You can see how this can lead to bad things happening.

Thanks Charlesvar for the information on deletng all but the local host. A lot of web sites that I used to visit now work again. I did see at the beginning of the file that in July 2004, someting called xero grid inserted a file in my hosts file. thanks again all.
