I just did a clean install upgrade to XP Pro. I inadvertently left my USB Zip drive plugged in and now my Zip drive is the "C drive" and my hard drive is the "F drive ". Is there a way to reassign drives without a reinstall of XP? I have few programs installed, so other than time, I can do a reinstall, but would like the "Quick Fix" if it is possible.

    • Right Click on My Computer, and choose Manage from the menu.
    • Go to Disk Management in the Tree View.
    • In the Right hand window, right click on the Zip Drive and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths...
    • Click change and give the Zip drive a new letter.
    • Right Click on the HDD, and do the same for the HDD.
If you wish to re-use the drive letter from the HDD, you will need to reboot the computer as drive letters of active drives are locked.

    Laage,
Thanks I will check it out, then I should be able to redirect any programs to the new drive letter as they come up.

Laage, I changed the Zip with no problem. When I tried to change the HDD, I got a message, " Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume." I guess this means that I have to do a reinstall of XP to change back to "C" drive for my HDD. Any other suggestions will be helpful.

I guess in hindsight that was almost to be expected... I've never had to reassign the boot/system drive, so I didn't think about such problems, sorry.

PowerQuest's PartitionMagic (only version 7 is XP compatible) has a drive reassignment function if you really wish to avoid a reinstall, however I would expect that it would suffer from the same shortcoming(s) as Windows' native reassignment functionality.

If you really haven't installed too many applications I would recommend a reinstall.

The worst part is I have a copy of XP Pro from back in November. All the windows updates that I went through to get this far is very time consuming. Is there a way to save the updates and reinstall them? They all were auto-installed from Window Update site.

If you can go with what you have for a little while, SP1 is due out in September and with a clean XP install then SP1, you shouldn't need any of the other updates.

The Beta has been out a while and after the tweaks and re-releases and tweaks and so on, it should be pretty stable so if you really don't wanna wait and know some larger business with lots of XP (or with the developer CD subscription) you could always install the last SP1 beta.
