I have decided it was better to move the original thread here, and combine the two threads.

Let me point out that the setting NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation will not have any effect here:

As you can see, the setting NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation only applies to NTFS formatted partitions, and has no effect on FAT32.

It's just an old machine that we use to save the files onto.

The main program I am using is Adobe Illustrator CS2. Example I named a file Bangor-FFA-Softball-2007.ai (the naming scheme I've been using for 6 years without problem)and I now have BANGOR~2.ai, BANGOR~3.ai, etc.
It happens whether I go to File Save or just hit Ctrl S. Since that's pretty much the only program I use all day, I was hoping to have time to uninstall and reinstall it today in case that has something to do with it before I try removing the network and having to set that up since that is apparently more complicated.

Hmm windows is reducing the file name to 8 characters like DOS does.

It's something simple but I can't put my finger on it.

It only does it when I save over the network (not onto my local machine) so they thought it was a network problem.

Uninstalling and reinstalling Illustrator didn't fix it. So I did some more checking on-line and finally found my solution. There was an update to Illustrator CS2 because that was a problem with saving to non-Windows servers over a network. Previous to this version I've never known them to have updates (like most programs do) so I didn't even think of it. I feel like such an idiot, I just had to search for the right thing. I had started looking for an answer over a month ago but had to drop it because I got busy and I thought it was with other programs as well, but I remembered wrong. Sorry for wasting everyone's time but I really appreciate the help you offered. In case anyone else can't find the answer, here's the link http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=331725&sliceId=1 Sorry again.
