File Names Displaying as 8 dot 3

Hello,

I recently got a new computer at work and for some reason when I type out the long file name and save it, it saves just fine however if I open the same file and save again it shortens the long file name to the 8 dot 3 characters short name. It is very annoying as I am a graphic designer and rely on the long file names to keep projects organized. I am relatively computer savy for a designer and can follow directions help. Help would be greatly appreciated on this matter.

Edit: I am on Windows XP Home and saving to a file server machine which is Windows 98. My previous machine was also Windows XP Home and saving to the machine with no problems.

Thanks,
Rachel

That didn't work. I restarted in between.

From the Link:

Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP
To disable the 8.3 name creation on all NTFS partitions, type fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1 at a command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Did you incluse the 1 at the end of the command? In the link, it wraps to the next line

Yes, I included the 1. Good thought though

And of course you included the space before the 1?? That separates the command elements so that the proper operative is written to the Registry data string.

You can check the Reg Key they give in the link to verify all is in place correctly. That would smack of belt, suspenders, and a string but we need to be sure. :)

Where do I go to check that I put in everything correctly? I'm not that advanced and I can't tell on the page.

Click Start > Run > type regedit (press enter) > browse to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem.

One the right side screen, you'll see the Value string named NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation

Verify that the value data for that string is 1 rather than 0. If it's zero, double click it and change it to 1.

Thanks for spelling that out for me. Yes, it is set to 1. The only one set to 0 is Win31, which probably doesn't matter, but I thought I'd mention it.

A little more info that might help. I decided to try saving to my local machine and the file name is not changing to the shorter one. The file server I am saving to is FAT32. No idea if that will help, but I thought I'd through that out there.

OK, you're in good shape there but if the problem persists, we have no joy.

Generally what you are describing would point to some legacy program that can't handle the long filenames. If this happens one program only, review how you are configured for the "save as type" just in case that's relevant.

With the new box and different installs, it may just be some simple default setting that has changed, assuming you are using the same programs as the previous box had.

Perhaps try reinstalling the particular program.

Hi, GppSports. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

In case anyone following this thread is not aware of the copy/paste method below, you can
1. Drag your mouse across fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1
2. Right-click on the highlighted text and select "Copy ".
3. Click Start > Run... and type cmd in the "Open:" field.
4. Click the OK button to bring up the DOS command prompt window.
5. Right-click on the DOS window and select "Paste ".
(Ctrl-V does not work for pasting into the DOS window.)
6. Press the Enter key to issue the command you just pasted.
7. Type exit at the DOS command prompt.
8. Press Enter to exit the DOS command window.
Then you will know you have it correct (assuming Microsoft's KB is the correct syntax - I have noticed their KB articles sometimes contain typos.). :)

:D Looks like we tripled on that last post.

With your added info, I now suspect the server is not accepting the files as long filenames. Since you said it worked with the old box, perhaps try uninstalling your networking software and reinstalling it.

Do the file names have spaces in them? If so, try one without a space.

Nope, no spaces in the file names.

I asked my husband how to do the networking thing and he had a questions, "Are they saying to remove and re-add windows networking on your workstation? "

I think on this forum I should have said I'm a beginner on computers instead of intermediate. :)

Yes, but I would not suggest that if you are less than intermediate skilled. I would suggest instead that you post this problem in the Networking Forum. You can get more in-depth and perhaps step-by-step instructions there for doing the process.

I am assuming that other workstations on the network are able to fetch and save similar long filenamed files without a problem. If nothing has changed with the server, the only difference is with your new machine so there is hope that someone in the Networking Forum will have the answer.

Hello,

I was referred over here from the Windows forum.

I recently got a new computer at work and for some reason when I type out the long file name and save it, it saves just fine however if I open the same file and save again it shortens the long file name to the 8 dot 3 characters short name. It is very annoying as I am a graphic designer and rely on the long file names to keep projects organized. I am on Windows XP Home and saving to a file server machine which is Windows 98. My previous machine was also Windows XP Home and saving to the machine with no problems. I decided to try saving to my local machine and the file name is not changing to the shorter one. The file server I am saving to is FAT32.

After trying some other things and them not working they made this suggestion, "With your added info, I now suspect the server is not accepting the files as long filenames. Since you said it worked with the old box, perhaps try uninstalling your networking software and reinstalling it." they suggested I come over here for directions on how to do that. I am computer savy for a graphic designer but by no means an expert when it comes to this sort of thing.

Thank you, I will give that forum a try. My husband is actually a network administrator (and agrees I shouldn't try that myself) and I can have him help me if need be. Hopefully I won't have to come back to you all again. :)

Can you give an example of an exact file name?

Can you also describe how you "save" the files to the server. There are a number of ways to do that and some may be more likely to behave as you describe, than others.

What program are you using to open the files?
