I need some assistance in figuring out how to set Internet Access Via Proxy Server.

Daughter is currently in Italy and using a program called JOOST http://www.joost.com which will allow you to watch TV shows from around the world.
She gets the following error from JOOST.

She is in a temporary apartment where she simply plugs her laptop directly in to the wall and is connected to the internet. No logons or install required.

She cannot ask the administrator to do it for her.

On JOOST web page I found the following link http://www.freecap.ru which does not really make it clear as to what we do next.
    http://http://www.joost.com/forums/search.html?q=freecap

Daughter is in Italy and I am in Pennsylvania, USA. We communicate via phone and PC and she would like me to help her with this. I am fairly PC literate but she is not, so I will have to talk her thru it all .

Any help in figuring this out would be greatly appreciated as I know nothing about proxies.

I have tried JOOST on my home PC and it works fairly nicely. (cable connection)

    Thank You

    Jorjab

The message you quoted means her ISP has busted her for trying to beat their system.

I’m leaning towards thinking we can’t help you circumvent this. Will get back to you shortly….

    Steve,

The reason we are trying to do this is as follows.

My daughter speaks no Italian (trying to learn) and is working in Italy for a couple of months. The TV access in her apartment is only for Italian TV. We are trying to find a way for her to watch some English language TV or movies on her laptop . I found out about JOOST in PC World Magazine articles by a Steve Bass and thought that it would be legal and ok to use it.

If we cant get Joost running for her are there any other suggestions to get her some TV on her laptop. BBC is ok also. When she stayed in a hotel she got BBC and CNN World wide there along with Italian TV. I do know that the ABC and NBC shows on the web cannot be seen outside of North America.

With my limited viewing of JOOST program requirements, it needs a proxy server running ... not sure if locally installed or if computer needs access via proxy/internet connection (??).
First I would have your daughter call her ISP provider. If they are blocking, it could be it is misconstrued as a P2P agent. She could also ask if they have any issues running JOOST, a legitimate questions, since it appears to not violate digital rights restrictions. If they agree, possible they could give her some assistance in setting it up.
    Best of luck.

What would we do without the good old beeb!

Have a look at http://bbc.co.uk, lots of good content and interesting programming available over the web.

Another good avenue to investigate is podcasts. A simple podcast utility like http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/ can be scheduled to get the latest podcasts and download them to your PC to either listen on your PC or upload to a MP3 player.

And the BBC also do some excellent and interesting podcasts. Here are some of my favourites:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/entertainment/kermode.shtml

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/history/inourtime/inourtime.shtml

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/

    Dennis -

ISP provider - help desk people only speak Italian - She only speaks English and I am not sure she even knows who they are. This is a temp apartment for transients - IE one step above a hotel with included internet access. She just plugs into the wall and is connected -

Re P2P connection - she has been able to use Utorrent - so do not think that is a problem but I really have no idea.

    Reggie -

Thanks for the links will send them on to her.

I just tried the BBC direct link I tried saying I was in US as well as saying I was in Italy. Very nice and probably the easiest to use. No installs required. Connection speed potential problem but very nice. Thank again

    Reggie -

sorry but the BBC links do not actually get you anything you can actually see. I was too hasty in looking at the web page.

Mainly you just can get their schedules or need to buy a special card for where you are or they tell you to ask your cable provider to ask for the BBC stations. Exceptions are daily news feeds and Animal planet.

did also discover that If you pick UK instead of International then under TODAY you can find videos to watch of Dr Who shows as well as video podcasts.

Everybody - will still like to figure out how to use Joost.

    Thanks

One more interesting thing we discovered.

If my daughter just plugs into the Italy ISP then she cannot see many TV programs on various web sites. But if after she plugs into the wall, she logs on to her Company internal web site then she can see the videos and it acts as thought she is back on the US. I guess because the company web site is either international (it is an international co) or it is a US web site.

She then has access to the major network shows on their internet web pages.

In this case she may not actually need Joost any more.
