I have no desktop, start button or icons. Only background color and picture that I had placed on my backgorund comes up.

Previously I tried to recover to an earlier date. Then when I tried to reboot, this is what happened. I can only get to internet through the error message which is a Windows explorer error.

    I have McAfee Total protection.

Download and double click this Shellfix reg file. Allow it to merge the file when asked. Disregard any warnings as the file is safe.

This should repair your damaged explorer.exe shell functions. That sounds like it may be your problem. It has likely happened due to some MS Patch or update that installed.

What you can also do is to roll-back the System Restore. Just pick the restore point that was made before you did the other restore.

Well, first you can look to the number of posts posted by the people that advise you. That's at least in indicator how active they are here.

You can also wait a day or two... when no one steps in to caution you for advise given, the advise will probably be sound.

    :D Thanks, I needed that!

I suppose the feeble attempt at humor in my signature is inappropriate but it struck me as applicable to the way forum repair procedures can often go astray. There can be no certainty of how the person applies any advice or procedure since it's a remote operation.

I'd hope to be the last person to lead a little old lady astray. :)

To comfort you, I will say that any advice that I offer, if properly applied and the directions are followed precisely, will not damage your system and MAY repair it. I base that statement on many thousands of help offers such as yours. I have never done any damage to a system.

The repair that I offered is a standard Regedit4 file that is XP compatible and backwards compatible with previous Windows systems. It will place the correct shell (explorer.exe) command in the Registry since that is the correct shell command for all versions. No harm will be done if the Key already exists since duplication is disallowed automatically.

With the peer review on most forums like this, you can be fairy certain that the advice given is appropriate. That said, it is still a risk to attempt to repair your system if you don't have the necessary skills. If you feel such trepidations strongly, then you should consider taking your system to a repair shop so you can have single source responsibility if things go wrong. That assumes you use a reputable shop with a competent technician. ;)

    All the best.
