    Hi,
I was trying to figure out why a friends Windows/Me computer all of a sudden was not able to connect to the Internet (Broadband) via wireless Linksys Wirless G router...

I checked the Ip address and it has 0000 where normally is the router Ip address.

I disconnected the ethernet cable from the router and plugged that directly to the modem and tower, and was able to connect to the Internet by-passing the router.

The modem has all the lights on (steady) like it's suppose to be under normal conditions and the router is displaying the proper lights as well.

A family member is able to connect the laptop wireless to the Internet when the cables are connected to the router but not when they are disconnected.

When I tried to access the router 192.168.1.1 nothing happens and I'm not able to gain entry to make sure everything is set up correctly.

I am puzzled by this and any assistance will be greatly appreciated...

Where did you make this check? Is this what you are seeing in the router configuration or the PC's configuration?

Can you please post an ipconfig /all output so we can see how your PC is configured? The command below pipes the ipconfig output to a text file, the contents of which you can then copy here.
    Code:
    ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt
The command is run at a command prompt. Start > Run > cmd

  3. to hide this advert.

    Hi,
Yes, I went to start, run and typed in cmd and then I typed in ipconfig /all and the Ip address instead of being 192.168.1.1 was 0000

That is when I by-passed the router and was able to connect to the Internet with no problems...I reconnected everything to the router and no connection was made...I shut the modem off for a few min's, turned it back on and still was not able to get onto the Internet...When I tried accessing the router by typing in 192.168.1.1 in the address bar, nothing happens with or without the router connected...A new router was purchased but before hooking it up I want to make sure I have covered all bases...

Can you access 192.168.1.1 from the wireless laptop?

I would check your network cable. It could be that is faulty rather than the router.

Also try setting the ip address manually to:

    IPAddress: 192.168.1.5
    subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
    gateway: 192.168.1.1
    dns: 192.168.1.1

Can you then access the router on 192.168.1.1?

Posting the ipconfig output would still be useful!

    Hi,
I am unable to copy and paste the command screen regarding the ip address and when I by-pass the router and use the modem to connect to the Internet, the same problem with the ip address remains. (0.0.0.0)
The ip address with and without the router is: 0.0.0.0
    The subnet mask is: 0.0.0.0
    The DHCP server is: 255.255.255.255
Not sure if you need more info or not on that ? Also I tried new cables and that did not make a difference...

    Hi,
I guess we can call this an FYI...Since I have been preplexed by the following:

"I checked the Ip address and it has 0000 where normally is the router Ip address" (which I posted in my original posting),I have yet to encounter such a problem or even see documentation refrencing such, I began my search for answers.

In my search to find the why's and why not's, I came across information that is known as "MediaSense" will create the IP Address of 0.0.0.0 (you can find more info on it thru google) and appears to be the explaination and answer to my dilemma.

I will attempt the precribed info and will post back the results as soon as I can in the next two or three days hopefully (the problematic computer is at a friends house that's why the delay)...

    Hi,
First I want to apologize for taking longer than expected to get back to my friends house and post back here, but I did and here is the update:
    (1) I tried to access Internet Explorer and it said "cannot find server "...
    (2) I then tried to ping: www.yahoo.com and the response was "bad command or file name "...
    (3) Followed that up with ping to the router 192.168.1.1 and given the same response as in step 2...
    (4) Then ping 127.0.0.1 and recieved the same response...
    (5) It was at this point I attempted to disable the "MediaSense" which is slightly different in Windows/Me than in Windows Xp, rebooted the computer.
    (6) Upon restart, once the computer reached the desktop, the hour glass kept running...
    (7) I rebooted the computer to safe mode and re-enabled "Detect connection to Network Media" that I disabled in step 5, rebooted the computer to normal mode...
    (8) Another attempt was made to access Internet Explorer and was amazed to see a connection was finally made...
    (9) Decieded to check the Ip address (ipconfig/all), and once again saw just 0.0.0.0 for an Ip Address which puzzled me...How can I have an Internet connection that was showing all zero's for an address ??? So I rebooted the computer again and was still able to access the Internet...
    (10) I ran XCleaner and it found: Viewpoint Media toolbar, Web Rebates and WinWhatWhere which were all deleted successfully...
    (11) It was at this point I realized that when using Ipconfig /all to check the Ip address that I was working on Windows/Me and needed to use "winipcfg" and not "Ipconfig /all "...With great delight, the proper Ip address, etc was there...Accessed the Internet again with no problems...

We can close this chapter and for now I think steps 5 and 7 was the answer to this situation...Once again, I want to thank everyone for their assistance.
