    Hello,

I was referred here by avast! support since I receive the following after a scan:

Sign of "Win32:Adware-gen. [Adw]" has been found in "C:\WINDOWS\Installer\47a07c.msi\Binary.Binary188\whAgent.exe" file.

Sign of "Win32:Adware-gen. [Adw]" has been found in "C:\WINDOWS\Installer\6d5be.msi\Binary.Binary188\webhdll.dll" file.

Sign of "Win32:Dialer-567 [Trj]" has been found in "C:\WINDOWS\Installer\6d5be.msi\Binary.Binary188\whiehlpr.dll" file.

However, since I do not have a "Installer" folder in the Windows sub-directory how can this be?

Hi, InternetOutlaw. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)
The "Installer" folder is normally hidden (which Microsoft did to help prevent people from accidentally modifying/deleting important files).

    In Windows Explorer:
    1. Click Tools > Folder Options > View tab.
    2. Click "Show hidden files and folders ".
    3. Click the Apply button.
    4. Then click the "Apply to All Folders" button.
    5. Then confirm and click the OK button.

You should also MOVE your HijackThis.exe file from your desktop to its own permanent folder on your hard drive (such as C:\HJT). This is reportedly necessary for HijackThis to be able to create backups in case "fixes" need to be reversed.

I expect a malware-removal expert will be along to help you further. :)

CAUTION: DO NOT have HijackThis "fix" anything without carefully following expert guidance. Otherwise, you might render your computer unstable or even unbootable.

    Thanx Mailman!

I suspected M$ had hidden the Installer folder but I changed the viewing option when I originally setup the computer; partially why I am stumped. The only stand-alone" Installer" folder that I can find or view is
    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer

Something interesting from a Kaspersky online scan I performed last night include the following:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents\Unpacked\fp2006-final-3.00-setup\fp2006-final-3.00-setup.exe/file1626 Infected: not-virus:BadJoke.JS.RJump skipped
    (This is a false positive)

From the Kaspersky report, I suspect the issue may be related to WebHancer which was removed from Add/Remove Programs and then additional instructions from http://www.webhancer.com (which is not responding at time of this posting) and http://www.spyany.com/program/article_spy_rm_webHancer.html

What is frustrating is being unable to locate or view "C:\WINDOWS\Installer\" on my computer. I do hope a malware-removal expert will be along to help. From the looks of things, it appears this is a busy board which may imply they may be busy themselves.

Looks like you've tried to tackle the issue pretty well via anti-virus applications.

Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 2007 Free are two other applications the malware-removal experts here generically request victims to run before posting their HijackThis (HJT) log. You can find those two applications and instructions via this thread.

I expect those two apps will take care of a lot of the preliminary work that needs to be done. Please post details about what the two applications find/fix and then post a fresh HJT log.

      • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
    2. Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
    4. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
    6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
    8. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan.

Please post the AVG log and a new HJT log.

Let me know how things are.

    re:

    Thanks Mailman and Geri!

I had forgotten about Spybot Search and Destroy since I am an avid user of Lavasoft's Ad-Aware. Regardless, I downloaded, updated and ran Spybot which found some entries which I removed. However, the same original infected files were reported after I ran avast!.

I will download the AVG Anti-Spyware as you suggest and try it when I return late this afternoon. Perhaps this will resolve the issue.

    Geri,

Downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, performed the updates, and ran a scan. Would not generate a report so I took screenshots which can be viewed at

The program identified primarily tracking cookies which were expected by my presence on line.

    Hi
Your log looks clean, run kaspersky again and see if WebHancer comes up again.

    re:

Before running Kaspersky again, I double-checked all the view settings for the directory.

Although "Show hidden files and folders" was checked, there is another option, "Hide protected operating system files (recommended) which was also checked. Removing the check allowed me to view the "Installer" folder and delete the infected files which was confirmed by Avast!

Sometimes its easy to overlook the obvious. Also makes one humble.

    Thanx mailman and Geri.

    Thanks for the tip, InternetOutlaw!

I had thought you wouldn't need to uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" because I have several folders and files displayed in blue in my Windows folder/sub-folders. (The "Installer" folder and files inside of it are not blue on my display anyway.) I mistakenly thought the blue folders/files were the only ones hidden from view via that setting.

Now I just have to figure out exactly what the blue color code means.

You mean you deleted with Kaspersky and then confirmed afterwards with Avast!?

    re:

Glad I was able to contribute Mailman.

Once I was able to view the "Installer" folder using Windows Explorer, I simply deleted "47a07c.msi" and "6d5be.msi" which are part of the install source for "webHancer ". I then ran avast! again to confirm there were no additional infected files. I did not perform another Kaspersky online scan since it returned three false positives for Evrsoft First Page 2006, and avast!, which first discovered the issues, is installed on my system.

ZoneAlarm, avast!, Ad-Aware and cCleaner; the New Fantastic Four! :)
