    Hey guys,
My comp used to restart randomly once in a while (like maybe every 15 hours or so). Sometimes I got a BSOD as well. For a couple of days now, my comp restarts like every 20 minutes or so. Sometimes it doesn't even boot up, it just starts up and when the login screen comes up, it restarts again. I dont get BSODs now either, only restarts. When it finally boots up properly, the Windows Error Report thing doesn't show up either. Is this a hardware or a software problem? Please Help!!!

    Thanx a lot,
    Homerj

    Hello homerj,

See what system errors are being generated:

Right click on My Computer, then Manage.
On the left you will see Event Viewer. Expand that (click on the plus sign).

Then click on System. See if there are any errors being logged by the system when the problem occurs.

Right clicking on a line and then clicking on Properties will give you a window with more info concerning that line. You'll see in the top section right below the down arrow, a text graphic symbol. Clicking on that will place the error info text into your clipboard (memory). Bring up Notepad and right click and paste, that will transfer it to Notepad. You can then paste the text into your next post here.

    Regards - Charles

    re

Hello, That happend to my Dads computer. What i done to fix it was

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools

    Now, Click Disk Cleanup (FIRST)
Once that has finished and you click everything to get cleaned.

    Then, Click Disk Defragmenter

Click on C: or the drive you boot from (Normaly C:)

    Once that has finsihed.

Go to my computer right click your boot drive

Click Properties then click the Tools Tab

Now you should see somthing saying
Error-Checking now just click Check Now

    Now, Click the second one.
(Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors)

Now Click Start!, There are 4 Phrases this will go though.

Once that has finished, Go the same but choose the top one
    (Automaticlly fix file system errors)

That will ask you to restart. So click Restart or Yes what ever it askes you.

That should do the job, if it dosent your Hard Drive may have a fault what cannot be fixted.

    Thanks,
    - Gareth

Thanks for the prompt reply. I did all u asked and I dont think any errors were detected during the scan. Anyways the problem is still there. Could this be due to a driver problem?? I used to get a Driver_Irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD often.
Or is this a hardware problem? Faulty Ram or loose connections maybe??

I checked the ram and they seem to be fine. Could anything else be the problem??

    Hi homerj,

    Have to narrow this down:

Right click My Computer > Advanced tab.

In the Startup and Recovery Section > click Settings bar.

    Under System failure:
Uncheck "Autmatically restart" and make sure "Write an event to the system log" is checked.

    Under Write debugging information:

Complete memory dump should be the default and the Dump file location showing as %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP

The next time this happens, write down the error message on the screen and post here.

    Regards - Charles

I checked out Event Manager and for the last BSOD that came up, this error was generated.

Another BSOD came up and this time everything in memory was written to a DMP file. There was no specific error. The only message displayed was that Windows had discovered a serious error and that my comp had been shutdown to prevent damage. But there was a file name at the bottom of the screen - ntfs.sys
What should I do with the DMP file??
    Thanks

I followed your instructions but i think there was some problem because the debuglog file contains only error messages like these
    :
*** Your debugger is not using the correct symbols ***
    *** ***
*** In order for this command to work properly, your symbol path ***
*** must point to .pdb files that have full type information. ***
    *** ***
*** Certain .pdb files (such as the public OS symbols) do not ***
*** contain the required information. Contact the group that ***
*** provided you with these symbols if you need this command to ***
    *** work. ***
    *** ***
    *** Type referenced: nt!_KPRCB

It also mentions that the symbol file cannot be found.

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (8e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.

    Hi homerj,

I'm no expert at reading dump logs, but did notice that the process that errored is: PROCESS_NAME: firefox.exe

Now it may be that on this particular instance, it errored on FF, on another instance it may be something else. In that case, I'd say you have bad memory or CPU. The only way to know would be to look at multiple dumps.

If it's consistently FF, then as a first step, uninstall/reinstsall.

Another check you can make is to run your HD's MFG's disk diagnostic tool. Go to their site - download and run.

    Regards - Charles

ok i'll take a look at future dump files to see if it's always firefox that crashes.. I also get Driver_IRQL_Not_Less or EQUAL Bsods with the problematic driver file sometimes being a RealTek Audio driver and sometimes a USB driver. I've checked the drivers and they seem to be up to date.

That dump's crashed with memory corruption (36 errors). Any overclocking? How many sticks of RAM do you have?

I got yet another blue screen, with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR EQUAL with the DRIVER FILE INDICATED AS TCPIP.SYS
I ran the debugger and am posting the log file below.

No the cpu has not been overclocked. It's an Intel P4 2.66 Ghz. I have 1 GB of ram - 2 sticks 512 MB each.

    Hi homer,

    Play with the RAM sticks:

Try switching them first and see what happens.

Still errors: take one out - first one, run with it, then the other and run.

Either RAM or the CPU is bad

    Regards - Charles
