There is a Links folder that shows up randomly under my favorites in IE. I can delete the Links folder to trash but it just keeps reappearing, sometimes instantly. It is more of a nuisance than anything but is there a way to get rid if it for good? I never use the Links folder. Thanks.

I think that you'll find if you right click the IE toolbar and deselect Links, the folder will stay gone when deleted. As soon as you select Links, the folder will re-appear.

Thanks for the response. I have unchecked LINKS in the IE toolbar but that pesky folder keeps showing up in my favorites.

This thread has given me an head ache.

    1) I have the LinksFolderName value set to "Links ".
    2) I have deselected "Links" in the IE toolbar.
    3) The folder "Links" has been deleted and stays deleted.

    4) If I select "Links" in the IE toolbar, the button will appear greyed out with no function and the folder "Links" will reappear in the Favorites folder.

    5) If I set the LinksFolderName value to " " (empty) and select "Links" in the IE toolbar, the top subfolder in the Favorites folder will appear with its name. To the right of it, another folder (unnamed) appears and to the extreme right, an arrow to open the rest of the folders. All the buttons are active (not greyed out). The "Links" folder does not reappear.

What gives me an head ache is #4 ... ... I don't remember what I did to get the "Links" button greyed out ... ... !

    Anyone?

Try adding a few links to the Links folder.

Situation as in #4 above, I saved a link in the "Links" folder. A double-arrow appeared to the right of the "Links" button and clicking the double-arrow dropped down the saved link. The button remained greyed out.

I'll have to restore an early (september 2004) Ghost Image to see what it was like originally.

"Links" is not a button here, but just a label, like "Address ".

Thanks Dave, you're right that it's not a button but a label.

I probably only unticked the option to show the Links in the IE toolbar and that kept the deleted Links folder from reappearing on my system. That wasn't enough on snsjets' system which needed the registry hack.

I wonder why systems differ but then, I wonder a lot due to my teflon coated memory ... ... and I still may have done something that I don't remember. I can't find anything in my notes.

I have to admit that lately, the Links folder has reappeared on a few random occasions. Maybe it has something to do with a recent update?

I found the registry key that keeps track of the sort order:

    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder
There are two keys, one for the Favorites and one for the Start Menu. I have only messed with the Favorites and if that key is deleted, the Favorites get sorted alphabetically. The key does not get recreated until one of the following events:

    - the user changes the sort order
    - the user adds a link
    - the user adds a subfolder
    - the key gets recreated for the "Favorites\Subfolder" where the change takes place
    - clicking a link does not trigger a change to the key

Maybe deleting the key for "Links" only will keep it from getting recreated but that key was present on my system?

Try unlocking the toolbar and then expand the links bar by clicking on the separator to the left of it and drag it. Or just double click between the separator and the L in the word Links. Look at where my cursor is in the attached pic. Is that how yours looks or are we on different wave lengths here?:D

    Zander,
I'm on IE6 (you might remember that I got fed up with IE7) but it looks similar. When I did as you instructed, I had to tick the checkmark to get the "Links" label showing and it recreated an empty Links folder. I don't get the double arrows until links are saved into the Links folder. Dragging the separator towards the left will display the top links between the label and the double arrow. Clicking the double arrow will drop down the rest of the links. I can also drag the separator down to its own row which will display more links between the label and the double arrows.

Sorry but I have no time right now to take any screenshots.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the situation here. Everything you describe sounds perfectly normal to me. When you drag the links bar, the farther you drag it, the more shortcuts will appear. Double clicking between the separator and the L in Links should make it slide all the way to the left or right (depending on which side you have it on) and that will cause the bar that it's sharing to go as small as possible. Double clicking on it again will make it slide back exposing the other bar again. IE6 or 7 shouldn't matter. It works the same in both. As for the Links being greyed out, that's normal too. It's a label, not a true button.
