I have Pc-cillin as an antivirus and firewall, its the 2007 version and first of all it wont let me have Spybot on my computer, im having a problem with PcScnSrv.exe, it seems to be taking up alot of CPU and my ActiveX is all messed up. I was wondering if there is a different antivirus anyone reccomends that I should use instead of Pc-cillin, I mean are the free ones people talk about on here really good, or is there a different really good one that I should buy? thanks for any suggestions.

    Hello croth,

To get the ball rolling, one thread about various AV's people here use http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=54736&highlight=anti+virus

Lot's of threads here in the General Security section on this subject, take the time to find the threads here, just look thru the thread titles on previous pages.

Others will chime in about what they use.

    Regards - Charles

My update from the thread Charles posted - had issues with eTrust (CA).

Now running NOD32 + Comodo Firewall - well satisfied with both.

Running NOD as well - has been the most trouble free major application I've run, no fuss, no muss :)

Comparitive of AV's: http://www.av-comparatives.org/ - NOD always in the top.

Also pay attention to AVG's free version ranking - not bad at all. I run it on Vista and no trouble at all and so far is quite effective. I'm also a fan of AVG Anti Spyware, formerly Ewido - also comes as free on demand scanner which is what I use.

In general, you would always be better off in running an AV with a seperate firewall. Comodo, the one Pete runs, is probably one of the best ever, especially when you take into consideration its cost :) . I run the paid version of Sunbelt's Kerio, and well satisfied with it.

    Regards - Charles
