Have just started having problems with bootup of XP Home.
Sometimes it will boot to desktop then hang without proceeding to load task bar.
Other times it won't even boot to desktop at all.
Sometimes it boots to desktop and hangs then eventually shuts down.
So this is a bit weird.

I have after numerous attempt got it to boot properly but the time factor from booting from desktop to taskbar loading was 3 minutes which is an awfully long time to load the taskbar.

    I have 1280mb memory

Try booting to Safe Mode to see if the problem exists there also. If not, then you likely have a problem with your video drivers. Try Updating them and see if that helps.

It could also be a hardware problem but you must eliminate the video first.

Right click "My Computer" icon and select Properties > Advanced tab > Startup And Recovery Area > Settings > Untag "Automatic Restart." Perhaps you can then get an error screen on the next error occurance with some info to help point the way.

Go to Start > Run > type eventvwr.msc (enter) Check your Event Viewer to see if errors are being logged in the System or Program Area. If so, click on them to get all the info you can.

Hi Roy, hope you are getting some rain up there, at least enough to put some in the dams

Mmmm?...1280 Mb of RAM would be a strange configuration. Is that correct?

Thanks for your concern about our weather.
Getting some good rain but we need it to continue for a week or 2.
My wife was in Sydney last Th-Sat..said no rain but cold for a Queenslander...formerly NSW North Shore, but our move to The SUNSHINE COAST north of Brisbane 20 years ago was the best move we've made.

Just looking over this post and from a similiar experience of my own, I would suggest to cut back on stuff loading a boot up. It may not be how much but what and/or a possible conflict.

Alias. The old trial and error approach.

I have also had probems by things not shutting down properly after use. ( re-installs fixed that )

    Billybob,

I disabled ALL start up items and re-booted a few times.
Takes about 4minutes to full desktop operation.

IE takes about 30sec to open each time?

I see Ken has posted bootup issues I shall keep an eye on that posting as well.

I do have quite a number of shortcuts to programs in the Quicklaunch Toolbar..don't know if this has any slowdown effect?

I found it to be much easier to use and seem to have better control.

But that is in MY Machine. Yours may not be the same.

One thing that seems strange is that it shuts down and does not do an automatic restart (correct?). This may point to a hardware issue, like bad drivers or maybe hardware overheating.

The check of the graphics drivers (surferdude2's post) was something that brought back memories for me.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Slight possibility, the RAM configuration has a module of 256 Mb included. Remove that module and do some testing, if the other suggestions are not conclusive.

    mattman,

On this one you just might be on the ball regarding overheating.

After going through this crazy cycle in which it also would not recognise my hard drive I lifted the lid on the PC and gave the cables a bit of a shake at which time I also noticed a bit of a gunk build up around the fan area and until I clean it up have left the side cover off the PC and have had "normal" function since then.....other than the slow loads.

Quite frankly after a really good loooooong run of near perfect behaviour I have recently encountered some really weird behaviour that a lesser morsel would have taken the PC down to the local "experts" to be ripped off.

At 70+ I have overcome my trepidation/fear/awe of these brutes and realise that WE rule not this infernal machine though it never tires of throwing out challenges.

    At 75+ I agreee.

I started having a few problems with slow loading and other things a few days ago. One look told me it was CLEANING/DUSTING time. And as of this moment all is well ( in fact better ). I find it absolutely amazing how much faster and smoother sites load. Even games via the LAN are better.

    OOPS !!!
I have someone looking over my shoulder here and asking " How about checking into mine? ".
Answer: Yes "Dear. Will do. "
