    Hi, greenday. LTNS! ;)

I had never heard of "windefender" (unless you were referring to Microsoft's Windows Defender).

I Googled around with "windefender "-related search terms and found a few mentions of it in anti-spyware forums but those were by people who were seeking help with malware removal. I expect they (and you) were referring to Microsoft's Windows Defender.

I did find a "Real-Time Security" web site offering WinDefender for download/purchase.
That doesn't seem to be directly related to anti-spyware/anti-virus and, if you are using Windows XP, then I think that program would not be beneficial to you anyway. :) I do not know anything about the reputation of "Real-Time Security" either.

Anyway, I am not familiar with Windows Defender either (though I did use it for awhile while it was in beta) so I cannot offer my opinions based on first-hand experience with Windows Defender.

However, I do regularly use Grisoft's AVG Anti-Spyware as an on-demand scanner and I am impressed with it. Has a pretty good reputation too. I think the automatic update function will stop when the trial period (30 days?) runs out. I'm expect someone will correct me if I am wrong. (I purchased a license for my installation.)

I have often seen malware-removal experts direct malware victims to use AVG Anti-Spyware during their malware removal. I do not recall seeing a malware-removal expert direct someone to use Windows Defender during malware removal.

Perhaps someone who is familiar with both AVG Anti-Spyware and Windows Defender will shed some comparative light on the two applications (preferably with links to reliable information about malware detection performance, if that's what is most important to you).

This program looks old - 95/98 as mailman highlighted.

No mention of XP - let alone Vista, and the dialog boxes are 9X style.

As an FYI, one place to check whether a security application is legitimate and not annoyware/spyware/malware itself, is here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Windows defender does a decent job on Vista. I disabled it because I run spybot and adaware once every day or two just in case and I was tired of idle'in @ 667mb of ram in use.

Still, if you're worried about security, it's best to always use more than one tool. one tool will never catch everything. Windows Defender + spybot + adaware + avg should keep you squeaky clean :-D
