Hi,

Please help me if you can.

I have a brand new computer, installed the OS and everything myself...everything went fine, etc.

However, I am getting hundreds of the following error showing up in the Event Viewer (system log)

DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to start the service NMIndexingService with arguments " " in order to run the server:
{C6A811AB-F8FF-45A4-93E5-FC5CCB650BE7}

I did not get this on my old computer and am getting about 4 of these messages being generated every minute!!!!

I am running the following:

XP HOME SP2
2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo
2GB RAM
250GB HDD
GE 7600

Also, I have verified DCOM is not vulnerable and port 135 is disabled.
Thanks for your help

Hi, barry2616. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

If "Nero Scout" is a part of your Nero installation, try disabling Nero Scout and then rebooting to see if that solves your problem.

If that suggestion doesn't work,
• Click Start > Run > and type services.msc
• Click the OK button. This will open the Services window.
• Locate the NMIndexingService and determine if it is disabled.
• If NMIndexingService is disabled, then double-click it.
• Set the "Startup Type:" to "Automatic ".
• Click the "Apply" button.
• Then click the OK button and exit the Services window.
You might need to reboot for the change to take effect.

If that suggestion doesn't work, then check to see if you might need to download/install an update for your Nero application.

If that suggestion doesn't work, then let's proceed with some questions and answers. :)

========

Did the problem start immediately after installing Nero or making any changes to Nero settings?

Have you knowingly disabled any Windows Services? If so, then which Services?

Do you have any other CD/DVD burning software installed?

Can you recall exactly when the DCOM issue started and what software/hardware you changed on the computer immediately before it started occurring?
• If your DCOM issue started fairly recently, then perhaps you can use System Restore to revert your computer to the state it was in before the issue cropped up.
NOTE: This may have undesirable consequences with applications that you installed after the System Restore point you restore to.

How long ago did you install the OS? If fairly recent, can you recall all of the software/hardware you installed before the problem cropped up?

hundreds of event ID 10005

Mailman,

Thanks for the reply and info!! Good catch on the Nero!

I was fooling around with it more last night after posting this and decided to uninstall Nero...as soon as I did that the DCOM errors stopped.

But after seeing your post, I decided to reinstall it and disable Nero Scout...that seems to have worked....stupid Nero!!

I still have NMIndexingService start when I turn my computer on, but we will see if it slows the computer upon logging on, and if so, I suppose I could disable it using the steps you gave below??

Anyways, thanks again I really appreciate the info!

You're very welcome! :) I'm especially gratified because we could fix the problem right away with a single post. Your details you provided were very helpful. As a result, I learned a lot from them. Thanks!

Here is a link to an afterdawn.com forum thread which led me to suspect Nero Scout (even though the thread doesn't seem to directly address your NMIndexingService issue). It appears Nero Scout problems may be common. If you ever decide to experiment with suggestions in that thread, be careful. :) Keep detailed track of changes you make and be sure you have reliable back-up/restore plans in place in case things go amuck.

The NMIndexingService appears to be unique to Nero (as far as I know) so I expect you can disable the NMIndexingService without severely impacting your computer's stability. Again (so I don't have to feel responsible :)), reliable back-up/restore plans should be in place.

If your computer ever seems sluggish and you're not sure what is causing it, Process Explorer from Microsoft/SysInternals might be handy. It provides lots of details about currently-running processes. The download link is near the bottom of that page.

Good luck! :)

EDIT: BTW, THANKS for following up to let us know what worked! Your follow-up details may be helpful for someone else with the same or similar problem who runs across this thread.

All too often, people do not follow up to let other people know exactly what their solution was, and that can be frustrating for people seeking solutions.

Thanks again!
