Vistas Device Manager alone with "Manage" will not open since I did a System Restore to Factory Setting from a Partition on this system.

I have tried a SFC without luck.

Vista Home Premimum w/Dual Core Pent and 2GB RAM.

Attached a couple of pictures to show what I'm against.
    Would appreciate some guidance.

Why it is happening I don't know, but consider that you may have had a bad install of Windows. See if the computer manufacturer will send you a DVD of the OS (I don't think you should be charged or "make a fuss" :)).

    What I think should work:
Do an advanced search of your OS drive (C: ?) for compmgmt.msc, check the box "search for ... system files ... ". Right-click on the file in the folder System32. Select Open With. Click the Browse button, then highlight Computer in the left-hand pane, navigate to the Windows\System32 folder and click on mmc.exe and OK.

Thank you for the prompt answer. A am Mrs (Mudd) to so speak. Mudd has had a stroke and can't type and he can't control his hands or talk much but he points and tell me what he wants in that way.
He has read your post and shakes his head that he understands what you mean.

Thank you and if I can't do this maybe I can get more information from you to try it another way.

Try running the System File Checker. Go to Start and type "cmd" without the quotes, then right-click cmd.exe and choose "Run as Administrator ". Once at the Command Prompt, type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. You may need your Vista disc handy.

Thank you Nick. I tried that, with his help, before I finally tried something else. The SFC would not take either. A message about something not established, or words similar.

I found some disk he has. One is a Operating System Disco. Another is a System Restore Disco, and still a third (home-made) Slip-Stream to include extras.

I will not tell you what happened when I tried to get him to help me with this. He has such a hard time. But he's my husband and all things are alright.

I finally chose Operating System Disco and I don't know why. Anyway, it worked and all is well with the system. A lot of programs that came with the PC are not listed but that's OK. I'll handle that later.

Thanks to all. When Mudd was different he commented more than once about "the bunch of knowledgeable people that were so helpful on BBS" and I remember that. That's why I came here.

Again, thanks and good times to all.

If the PC came preloaded with software, it might have asked you to create a backup disc when you first started it up... see if Mudd created one to get those missing programs back. Vista machines usually also come w/ a partitioned section for restoring, perhaps you can use that to restore the computer to its begining state.

If you upgraded to vista however, these might not be options :) good luck!

It came loaded with Vista. I tried to discuss that with him but you will just have to understand that I can't do some things.

I attempted to run the Restore from the Start Menu but he nearly came unwound, like I was going to do something that would be bad. So as I say, it's OK now. The things that weren't running are now.

    Again, thank you.
