I have windows 2000 O/S system. I have been trying to run disk clean up for the past 2 days now and it seems to take a long time for it to finish its task. I have cancelled it and tried to restart the program to to no avail it does not run properly. I dont have the original disk for windows 2000. So what can I do to fix this problem to keep my disk space from become full. Thank you in advance.

Maybe you can solve your problems or get a better understanding of it by reading http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;812248

If you JUST want to remove some files you could do it manually:
    a) empty recycle.bin
    b) delete (all) contents of %temp% (usually c:\temp but don't forget c:\winnt\temp)
    c) C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download contains downloads of hotfixes
    d) C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files ActiveX downloaded
    e) probably a few others i don't think about now

if you want to remove MORE files, you might want to use one of the many 'duplicate files finders' , maybe this one http://www.geocities.com/hirak_99/goodies/finddups.html or this one http://labnol.blogspot.com/2005/01/find-duplicate-files-on-your-hard.html
of course you can look for one yourself MANY are freeware so no need to buy

    Win 2K Cleaning

If you don't have msconfig.exe, pull it from the net and install it in /Windows and Windows/System32. Run "msconfig" in the Run box and uncheck everything that you do not need to startup with (write the items you un-check down to enable them when you're through) and you'll be prompted to reboot. Disconnect from the net, if you're always on, upon reboot and then run the Disk Cleanup tool. These steps will elliminate services and startups that will allow your system to use both "nostrils" to breathe with, instead of one.

    HTH (Hope this helps):)
