Also, I see the error: Call to GetInteractiveInstallProgress failed, hr=8024000C

Do you have anti-virus software running? Make sure you exit that before downloading the updates, or if possible, exclude the following domain names from the virus check:

    • *.download.microsoft.com
    • *.windowsupdate.com
    • *.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    • windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    • update.microsoft.com

I am running NOD32. I have never had a problem with updates before, and all of the other updates are installed. It is just this one update that is illusive.

    I will stop NOD32, though.

Would you believe that when I look at my list of services that I do not see Automatic Updates in the list? I guess in Vista I just tell it not to perform automatic updates and that will take care of it.

I will report back shortly and tell you if this worked, or if I am pulling out more of my hair.

I had to reboot into Safe Mode to follow the instructions to 'ren SoftwareDistribution SDTemp.' I just did that.

Now I am shutting off NOD32, and will re-download the update to see what happens.

    Stand by.

Correct. It is not running right now.

I followed the instructions in that link you posted and renamed the folder containing the log file.

I shut off my virus software. I re-downloaded and installed the update.

I am attaching a new copy of my log which was created moments ago.

I cannot understand why this keeps on failing. I think I need to get a bigger hammer.

The link is the same as before. www.savealotofbucks.com/ebay/mywindowsupdate.zip

    Thanks, again.

We will beat this thing yet.

Can you also check your System log (event viewer) and post any error messages you get there?

Hmm... Microsoft security updates come with phone support. Maybe you could try calling & see if they know anything?

Searching on 0x800f0826 doesn't get you anything.

I may have to call MS Tech support since HP can't support it.

My system log will be waiting here: www.savealotofbucks.com/ebay/mysystemlog.zip

    Thank you, again!!

I will try it now and let you know what happens. Thank you for the advice.

edit: Interesting. I was told that I am not logged on as Administrator. This is true. I am logged in using my name, but I have admin privileges.

I am on hold right now with MS Update Support. This should be interesting. I will report back with any solution I get from them.

This suggestion was made earlier in this thread. I don't know what in the heck is going on here, but this solution did nothing to correct the problem.

M$ technical support did not figure out the problem either. They have escalated my case and will be calling me back this afternoon. I won't hold my breath.

Well, ladies and gentlemen... I just spent 1 hour and 14 minutes speaking to a Microsoft Tech Support person. She failed to get this update installed.

She even took remote control of my computer. No luck.

Now my call is being escalated and I am supposed to receive a call on Friday between 9a-11a ET.

    Wish me luck.

What a marathon, Craig. Hang in there. Mr. Bill Gates may be the next caller? Perhaps a new computer may be the only answer? :)

I hate to say it, but this IS a new computer. Only a couple of months.

Vista, and the writers of Vista need to be hung by their thumbs.

OK.... Some progress, but not 100% success.

I got a call from "Microsoft Research Team." I was impressed because on Wednesday they said they would call me between 9a-11a on Friday. Yesterday I got a reminder call telling me they would be calling this morning. I got the call at 9:15.

Here is what we did, and the results.

    1. Installed the distributable update KB931213.
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...f4-4123-4c97-86d8-00a83462c34b&displaylang=en

    2. Before rebooting go to command prompt and type the following in the command window:
    net user administrator /active:yes

What step two does is enable the admin account which is by default disabled in Vista.

    3. Disable any non-Microsoft services. This is done by clicking on START|RUN then typing MSCONFIG into the command window. When MSCONFIG starts, click on the services tab and then put a check in the box to hide MS services. Disable any remaining services.

    4. Reboot

    5. Login as Administrator

    6. At this point we checked the status of the update by going to Control Panel and looking at Windows Update. The update showed that it failed to install. At this point, the tech hid this update. After hiding the update, he checked for available updates and the update was shown as needing to be downloaded and installed again. However, looking at the log, the update installed successfully.

At this time, the update is installed, however Vista is confused about it. The support person is doing 'further research' and is going to call me back this afternoon.

Remember to disable your admin account if you try this. Just change the :yes to :no in the net user command line.

I will report back with further results as they happen.

I am impressed. The tech support person that spoke with me this morning called me back this afternoon. He had no solution, but said he was setting up a test machine in his lab to see if he could duplicate the results.

I am actually quite impressed that M$ is taking this so seriously.
