How about if you run taskmanager and click File > New Task and press the Browse button? Do you get the Browse screen? If so, click on the Desktop folder under your username (that should be in the Top window). See if it opens the folder and shows the shortcuts on your Desktop.

If you click "Shutdown" while in Task Manager, what User is listed on the context menu? Does it say "Log Off <your username>" as one of the items. If not click on "Switch Users" and see if you can log on with to another user account.

If you need to create a new user account, Taskmanager > File > New Task > and type NUSRMGR.CPL and press enter. That should open the Accounts applet and allow you to create a new user. Do so and then exit back to task Manager and clicl File > Shut Down > Switch User and see if you can log on to the new user account.

    Try those things.

I went ahead, copied and pasted explorer.exe to the corrupted drive and am able to get into the drive, but keep on getting a message which is calling for the OS cd evertime I turn it on. I am not able to get any sound or connect to the internet. I've tried to reload the drivers for the different devices on it. I have not been able to detect my modem. I keep on going through the wizard to set up my internet connection but the only available choice I wound up with is a broadband connection. I've loaded up the software drivers but cannot get an internet connection set up. So I am using this other backup computer for times like these. I want to thank you for all the help you've given me. Maybe I will be able to share what I know with someone else on this forum.

Well, you're making some progress, little by little. It's up to you if you want to make this a "work in progress" as a personal challenge.

If you tire of it, you have at least gotten the system to where you can copy any critical data from it. That example will no doubt give hope to others in the same situation. Your installed programs are another matter of course.

Keep the thread updated on whatever progress or decision you make so that your final thoughts are shared for others to benefit.

Stick around and pitch in some of your insight when the occasion arises.

    All the best.

Well, here it goes. I've managed to get into my corrupted hard drive and open my files, however I am not able to go online with that pc because even though the device manager is detecting the dial up modem, when I go to the create a connection (Network Connections) wizard I wind up at a window that's checked in the broadband connection option. At the top of that window is connect to a dial up modem option but is not available at all. Is there another way to set up a connection without using this wizard inXP Pro?
