I had XP (fat32) on a pc drive c. Used Partition magic to move the drive & partition with another 2.5 gig primary (before c) to install win2k server - as this seemed the only way to install 2k after XP. But I dont get the option to choose operating systems (2000 is on ntfs xp on 32) and when it boots into 2000 i only see that partition in my computer - the xp partition does not show.
What do I need to do now?
    TIA

I can now see the other drive - added it in Manage drives. Still cant boot into xp - how do I add a time limit to the op system loader option?

W2k's ntldr can't boot XP, but XP's ntldr can boot both. So, copy the XP boot files (ntldr, and maybe ntdetect.com as well) to C:, in order to replace the w2k versions.

    Still gonna have problems.

    Win2K is NT5. XP is NT5.1.

Part of the install process when you put XP on a system running 2K is to update 2K so it can understand the newer version. Not as bad a problem with FAT32 as it would be with NTFS but a problem none-the-less.

With XP going in first, that just won't happen unless somebody knows a trick I've missed.

silvercue - I'm going to make a suggestion you probably won't like very much but I think it will save you time in the end. Back up anything on that PC you want to keep and then start over. Blow everything away. Put 2K on c:\ and then put XP on D:\ (partition or different drive). And if you are only going to run 2 NT systems on there, use NTFS. If you plan to run a 9x/ME load as well, start with it first and then 2K and last XP.

so on my winxp machine, i was planning on partitioning the hd and installing win2kpro on the 2nd partiton.

but if i'm reading you correctly, that would be out of order, i.e, w2k has to go on prior to winxp?

    hmmmmmm

    :)

NEWT Thanks for the advice - I had already started doing what you suggesetd before I read your post.

MARK You have to install Win2k before XP - I learned that the hard way.

One problem I had is that Partition Magic actually made suggestions that caused many problems - I now know those suggestions were way off.

    silvercue...

thanks for the PM heads up. i've had good success with it to date (not heavy use, though).

and i'm seeing that i need to rethink my plan to add w2k to my winxp machine.

i could temporarily add a 2nd physical hd, create a winxp image to it, wipe the 1st drive, then install win2k to the 1st drive and copy the winxp image back.

    yeah, that's the ticket

    :)
