Multiple sessions open at once

Hi, For some reason for the past week my computer has not worked correctly. When I click on an icon/application it will open and then have multiple sessions open until I have to power my PC off manually. I don't know what is causing this and I want to fix this. i've used last known good and system restore to try and fix the issue but it still is happening. I run/ran spybot search and destroy and ad-aware personal twice a week. What can I do to fix this issue please? I appreciate any help.

Have you messed with the registry or downloaded any new programs recently?

 

Possible mouse / mouse software has gone into hyper overdrive crazes. Do you have another mouse you could try on your computer? If your running 3rd party software, check the settings / reinstall.

 

Nope, any ideas on what it could be?

 

Just a regular compaq mouse, nothing special. Any other ideas?

 

Following Dennis' lead...

Try attaching a different mouse. If it is a PS/2 mouse, your computer should be off while switching mice.

Perhaps the mouse button is "sticky" and does not spring back fully right away and, therefore, executes multiple clicks when/after you click it.

 

the first post in this thread is still happening. I tried a different mouse but no help. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, please?

To start somewhere to diagnose this:

Does this happen if starting system processes?

Does this happen if you start your apps from the All Programs menu?

Try disabling as many of your apps as you can on startup. If you've ruled out the mouse, then look at some app running in the background as the source.

the problem starts when I click on a deskcut shortcut icon. Do I have to reformat my HD and re-install the OS to get rid of this issue?

You haven't answered some questions:

Does this happen from the All Programs menu as well?

Create a Desktop icon for lets say Notepad - right click on Notepad under Accessories > Send to > Desktop shortcut. Once there, does that work correctly?

Right click a Desktop icon you're having a problem with > Properties. In the Target tab, what does the target locations say and is it directly to the .exe in that location or is it to another shortcut?

It doesn't happen all the time which is why it is hard to troubleshoot. it happens sometimes on word (I run it from microsoft office shortcut bar), sometimes on firefox shortcut icon).

I hardly ever go through start, all programs to open something so it is hard to say. I did what you wanted for word pad and it worked fine.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help. It is appreciated.

i can't create it on demand. it happens a couple times a week. The 2 thinks that stop it are last known good and system restore. Rebooting doesn't work. Do I need to format and reinstall OS?

 

Intermittent error conditions are extremely difficult to isolate. If my computer ... I would substitute to a different mouse and continue to use until problem returns. If continues, I would not rule out failing PS/2 port. My gut feeling this is being caused by a failing hardware component... until testing proves other wise.

 

Computer is only a year old so I doubt it's a HW problem.

 

Would be nice if we never had to worry about defective hardware. I've not been that lucky.
Is their a reason using a substitute mouse for a week or so is not an acceptable test?

Could be the Mouse driver. Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling?

Go into DM and uninstall the mouse > re boot, XP will re detect the mouse and it's driver.
