All a sudden, my daughter's iPod Nano and thumbdrive are not recogized at any USB pots on her desktop running Windows XP Professional. A dialogue box pops up from the system tray saying "USB Device not recognized" She told me all other USB devices, except the USB mouse, receive the same message too.

The starting point for problems such as this is to open up Device Manager and to remove all USB hubs and controllers. Reboot and Windows will re-install them. See if that fixes the problem.

    Hi PeteC,

I tried uninstalling them all, but problem unsolved. I suspect the interrupt of USB might be in conflict, as a software for an MP3 player has been installed. Now the MP3 player works with USB but the iPod doesn't.

Can anyone tell me how to fix the "USB Device Not Recognized" problem?

    Thanks in advance.

I might see that as a software conflict, not hardware, so me, I would uninstall both players/software.

Look for an update for the USB controller drivers, they should be included with the chipset drivers. If it is a branded computer like HP, Compaq, Dell, Sony, etc, look for chipset updates at their website. If it is non-branded, download Everest in my signature and see if that identifies the chipset (some are Intel, nVidia, VIA, SIS, etc).

A tip?? Look at if the MP3 player's software is starting at Windows boot. See if you can disable it from running at startup and use it only when it is selected from the All Programs menu (msconfig?).

    Good suggestion Matt.
My son had a iPod for a short week (returned it / bought a Wii). iPod's works best when interfaced through iTunes. So if Ivan has iTunes on computer, may consider uninstall / reinstall of current release.

    Eventually I solved the problem.

It was not the Device Manager nor the iPod. It was the mother board and connectors to the USB ports.

I opened up the PC and detached all USB connecting wires, one by one, I found that one of the connectors was mis-connected. (+ve and data lines mis-fitted, perhaps due to the last repair maintenance by a poor-quality technician!) The USB port was not used very often, so the problem did not triggered and affected other USB ports. When it was used, then it affected others as well.

I re-connected all USB ports properly, then all ports re-discovered and usable!

Thanks for the update - good thinking to check out the connections under the circumstances of a recent repair :) I always wonder why those connectors are not combined in a single block connector - they are fiddly to fit at the best of times and mistakes easily made.
