I'm trying to back up our family photos on our laptop's hard drive by sending copies to a blank CD. Once I've selected the files and clicked on the "Copy to CD" option in "Picture Tasks" I get the slightly bland error message "Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this folder. What do you want Windows to do?" The 3 options given are Retry, Skip or Cancel.

I have no problems sending documents, music or video to CD.

I've had a hunt round for advice and suspect the problem may be that the files have been defaulted to "read-only" by XP, and however much I try to unpick this they default back to "read-only" every time.

Does anyone have any advice or solutions?

    Thanks in advance.

What happens if you copy a selection of the photos to another folder on the drive? Can you then alter the file attributes (can't see that would be a problem anyway) and burn to CD?

Thanks for getting back to me Pete.
    I've tried that already.
Any folder I create on my C drive seems to have the Read-only box greened out when I check its Properties and un-checking and applying this seems to have no effect; when I next check its Properties the Read-only box is re-greened out and any photos in these files remain non transferable to CD.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks again for your help.

I don't know for sure if this option exists in XP Home, but go, in Windows Explorer to Tools > Folder options > View and scroll down and see if 'Use simple file sharing' is checked - if it is uncheck it. Does that help?

If it does not then go to My Computer > C:\ - right click on it > Properties > Security tab - highlight your User account and click on Full Control in the window beneath

If you are not logged on with Administrative rights you will need to do so.

Is it possible that you are selecting too many files for the CD to handle? Just a thought. Check the folder properties and see how much you have.

Don't be concerned about the "read only" aspect since that is the way XP is designed, all folders are designated "read only" and cannot be altered. As for the file properties, that's of no consequence either.

That is normal for folders, see Unable to remove Read-Only attribute from folder

    Thankyou all for your help.

"Use simple file sharing" does not seem to be an option in XP Home.
Also I canot find a "Security" tab on my C drive properties. The tabs I am presented are "General, Tools, Hardware, Sharing, Quota" and I've looked through all of them to no avail.

I'm trying to transfer about 3 GB of photo files onto a 4.7GB CD.

I followed your link and tried it. The "Read-only" atrribute was removed from the parent folder "Photos" but all the files inside have retained their "Read-only" attributes.

    Any ideas?
Thankyou all again for your help.

The part that doesn't fit there is, you previously stated the you were selecting "Send to CD." Normally the terminology of Windows is quite specific. Perhaps you need to send it to a DVD. I assume you have a combo CD/DVD burner?? Have you burned DVD's before with that burner?

AFAIK the native burning software in XP - is this what you are using? - does not support burning to DVD. Again, AFAIK this facility was introduced in Vista.

Have you tried burning a, say 600Mb selection to CD? The read only attribute is a red herring - the files will assume that as soon as they are on the CD anyway.
