In order to do a XP repair. I need to know the Administrator password. I lost windows last week and tried to repair using my OS disk but it wanted the Administrator password. It wouldn't take what I had set as the user password. I tried leaving it blank. Nothing worked. How do I do a repair if I don't know the Administrator password. There wasn't a password set until I installed all the Microsoft updates. Now there is. What's a person to do, except a clean install. That means losing everything. Can anyone help me figure this out for the next time I lose Windows? I'm sure it will happen again. It's happened at least three time before and I had to completely reinstall. How do I get by the Administrator Password?

If it will boot into Windows, boot into the main, usually hidden Administrator account.

In XP Home, that account is accessible only in Safe Mode. It is also accessible in Safe Mode in XP Pro but with Pro, you can press Ctrl/Alt/Del twice at the Welcome screen to bring up the Administrator logon.

Even though the repair requires the Administrator password, you should be able to leave the password field blank and press the Enter key to logon to it in Windows.

Once in the main Administrator account, you can set a password for it. Then you should be able to enter that password in order to get to where you want on the repair install.

    re [Administrator Password]

If that dosent work. Try, this
Login to the account you normaly use. Click

    Start
    Run
    Type
    CMD and press enter

    Now type the following

    net user Administrator *
(Type all you see above including the *)

This will prompt you for a password. When typing the password in you wont see it on the screen. If you want to remore the pass just hit the enter button twice.

Thats it! Password either made or removed.

If you cant be botherd doing that, Here is a batch file i made for you. This will do the job for you.

    Have Fun!

    Thanks,
    - Gareth

Information above provided by Microsoft support: How to Change User Password at Command Prompt

Note that it will only work if the account you are using to change the password from (i.e. where you open the command prompt to run the command) is also part of the Administrators group. A limited account will receive an access denied message.
