Since this is a socket A AMD Athlon XP setup, temp. in the range of 40 ~ 47 celsius is ok, depending on the outside temp.
But as Matt said temp. of around 52 while idling is not ok , specially with WinXP.

How old is the computer that we are talking about? Whats the CPU?

    hi
all of the drivers are from the asrock site so should be ok. i have not added any new devices for a long time and its been ok up until about 3 weeks ago. i have changed the psu becase a friend said that could be the problem and i kept getting a message on the screen saying my graphics card is not getting enough power to run properly. i thnk it could be a heating problem as there is quite a lot of dust in the tower and it is in a very confined space which would cause exessive heat. but ithas never been a problem before. maybe i need to put another fan in the case.

Your System and drive temperatures are reasonably  good. The CPU temperature seems to be the one to concentrate on the most. It is not mentioned anywhere in the manuals, but removing dust build-up should be carried out on a regular basis.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for including the extensive information on your system. One or two points I would make that may not necessarily be concerned with the "problem ".
    • Optical Drive MagicISO Virtual DVD-ROM0000...virtual drives can cause problems (I know  ), uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs if you do not use it.
    • You have all your USB connections filled, this may put a strain on the power being drawn through the USB system. Consider getting a self-powered USB hub to run some of the non-system devices (eg., printer).

After cleaning up all the dust & checking fans etc. also check the SMPS connectors on the board. I had a case of Athlon XP recently where there was a problem with the connectors & the system kept on rebooting.

When you are running tempgnc the load on the CPU is high, maybe close to 100%, hence more heat is generated and it would seem that the CPU cooling is not as effective as it could be. My guess is that the longer you run tempgnc the hotter the CPU will get, up to a point where the system closes down. It may not have been a problem before, but the dust build up may have reached the stage where it is becoming a major problem in terms of effective cooling. Do be sure to check if your case has a filter element - there is one on my Antec case - and clean that out too.

If you can improve the air circulation round the case that would be of benefit

As has already been posted you should de-dust the case with particular attention to the CPU fan and heat sink. Whatever you you do do not remove the heat sink from the CPU, but it is quite safe to remove the fan which is generally fixed with screws to the heat sink. Clean the fan blades and remove all the dust from between the heat sink fins - this can be done without removing the fan, but is more fiddly. If you don't feel confident in removing the fan leave it in place and fiddle round it.

As long as you are careful and make sure that you do not dislodge any connectors there should be no problem in de-dusting. Use a can of air or a small soft brush and a vacuum cleaner. For the heat sink fins you will probably need to use a (preferably) non-metallic 'stick; - like a coctail stick to dislodge the dust before sucking it up with a vacuum.

BTW - SMPS was a new one on me - read power connectors :)

43 running processes is quite normal, 50 running on my PC at the moment.
