    Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked many times before or that it is obvious to correct.

When my PC is shut down, if I insert a USB Pen or my USB External HDD, my PC boots up without actually switching it on.

Can someone advise what to do to prevent this from happening?

    Cheers.

    Griff.

    Griff--

My guess is that you're triggering the computer switch with static electricity. Try this: hold the metal end of your USB Pen or the USB cable and with your other hand touch the s c r e w [the automatic language censor didn't like that word spelled without spaces!] that's in between the two electric receptacles in a nearby standard wall plate (or something else that's definitely grounded: the "power strip" of outlets I use for my computer has a metal casing, for example). Then put the USB thingy in the slot.

An alternate explanation is that (if the USB port is at the front of your case, near the power-on switch) pressing hard with the pen drive moves something nearby that activates the power-on switch. If this is the situation, the case-and-power-switch design is faulty; the easiest fix is to get a short (2-3 ft) USB extension cord and stick one end in the USB port in the back of the computer case, and use that instead of the front USB port.

Just to clarify, when I use a USB connection on the front of the case it does not happen.

I have a Belkin USB Hub and the situation only seems to occur when I plug into one of these USB ports or switch on a device already connected to a hub port.

    Then I don't know... Sorry!

(You may want to re-post in case other people think I've answered your question.)

Was rooting round the bios of a new machine yesterday and saw under Power Management a setting for "USB Device Wake Up" or words to that effect. I assumed it was to allow just what you are now experiencing Griff, but I don’t know. Worth a look in your bios.

    Thanks Guys, sorted it.

    For reference.

My Asus motherboard has 4 USB ports on it and 2 of them are USB Wakeup enabled.

Switched to one of the non enabled ports and it cured it.

    Griff.
