Is there any significant difference in Power Packs, the fan is making an awful noise on my power pack, I have another power pack in an older computer, can they safely just be swopped over?

John, There are some things to watch out for when swapping power supplies. Your present one will no doubt be ATX compliant so you want one of similar ATX rating. Also you want the wattage of the replacement to be equal or higher than your present.

There is another important caviat - if you are dealing with a Dell computer, they provided some power supplies that had a different pin-out than the industry standard. Swapping a standard unit onto one of those Dells will smoke the MOBO or the power supply, whichever lights up first. Maybe both!

Have you considered spraying some WD-40 into that fan. I have one running right now that I did that to over a year ago.

I have also replaced fans on power supplies. It's easy and the new fans can be had for $8 here in the U.S. I even disconnected a bad fan on an older computer and surface mounted the replacement over the outlet and connected the old power wires to it. It saved a lot of time and trouble and got the old box going for a person who didn't want to stick much money into it.

I hope that gives you some inspiration.

Hi Dude, I pulled the power pack apart, never seen so much **** and dust inside one, I wonder how it worked at all, cleaned it all and lubricated the fan bearings, put it all back and it is running quieter than it has ever done, thanks for your help as always
