I had to reinstall Win2000 and sfter installing SP4 I also installed .NEt v1.1 and 2.0 using windows update (and some others).
After doing that PC crashed after booting being unable to load winnt\system32\drivers\rdbss.sys
So I booted in safemode and saw that file existed in a 2 subdirectories in C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution\Download and I wondered why and thought 'maybe they have something to do with the .NET installations'?
So I renamed the one in system32\drivers into rdbss.yss and restarted PC
Now same problem with mrxsmb.sys and I renamed that one as well.
Meanwhile (using another PC) I found out it is a known problem as Microsoft is updating that file and shouldn't do it. It seems to have something to do with Nvidia drivers and also SFC seems to have control over it (I didn't check those things but READ that).

Once again I restarted my PC and now everything rebooted OK.
So I looked at C:\WINNT\SoftwareDistribution and am surprised it was about 95 Mb including about 85 Mb in \Download .
So the questions raised "What is it used for?" and "can I get rid of it?" and later "can I MOVE it to another drive "?
Does anybody know well about those things I mentioned above (including rdbss.sys etc)?

Yeah its where windows\microsoft update cashes installation files. You should be ok by deleting the content inside the download folder. Dont delete the folder tough...
