Task Manager Issues.

Hello everyone,

I've recently run into an issue with Windows Task Manager. I'm currently running XP Home Edition (SP2), and ever since a few days ago, my task manager briefly shows up, and then disappears into the void. Its come to the point where if you hover the mouse over the icon in the tray, it will disappear.

Now I figured this has to be a virus or spyware/adware/malware infection of some sorts, so I ran Ad-Aware, and AVG Anti-Virus to figure out which, and both of them came up with no results.

Now on top of the task manager not appearing, IE, and various explorer windows are running slowly, almost pathetically slowly compared to usual.

I've seen on Google and such that this type of thing might be related to AIM, but I don't really use that, I use Trillian, but I assume the same thing could affect it.

I downloaded HijackThis and put it in its own directory in C:\Program Files, ran it, and came up with this log. (Sorry for all the processes, I didn't think to run it in safe mode at the time).

Any help you could provide would be appreciated. If not, I may have to end up taking it to a dealer, which is money out of my pocket.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Open 'My Computer' and select the 'Search' feature. Then click the 'All files and folders' button. Click the 'More advanced search options' button and be sure the 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders' and 'Search subfolders' boxes are check marked then search for and delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
netshield.exe<<<--this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Hmm, the problem seems to be fixed now, but I'm unsure.

I ran the Windows Malware Removal program prior to receiving these instructions, and it seemed to remove something called "Backdoor: Win32/Rbot.gen!A ". Problem was, it would keep coming back with every restart.

Since I've followed your instructions and deleted netshield.exe, it seems to have fixed itself.

I will post two seperate logs, one from safe mode, and one from normal operation afterwards, please see if you can see anymore problems.

Like I said, the problem seems to have resolved itself for now, but I'm unsure if it will come back like it did with the previous restarts. The restart from safe mode to normal operation didn't seem to recreate the problem, but I've yet to power down, and power back on yet to see if it will come back.

Also, there was a netshield application file in the System32 folder that I did not delete, but its Last Modified date seemed to be 8/24/2004 and it seemed way out of the range of the problems date. If I need to delete this too, please let me know, and I will.

There was also a .pf file, for the Prefetch folder for NETSHIELD, but I did not delete that either, should I?

 

Unless you had deleted that file, the infection would regenerate itself. Even if you tried a normal mode deletion, it may not have worked. Safe mode deletions of malware files is very common. Many times the infection does not run in safe mode, thus we're able to delete the file(s) in question.

Not likely related, but if you like you can run the file thru a scanner: go to Jotti Online File Scanner
At the top of the Jotti page, there is a blank box, with a 'browse' button next to it. Navigate to the file and hit the 'Submit' button, see what it says about the file. It's not too uncommon to have malware files change the dates to confuse users.

Prefecth items can be deleted, and here is a tool to help with that, as well as temp files\folder, cookies:
Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
• Tick the following boxes:
  • Windows Temp
  • Current User Temp
  • All User Temp
  • Cookies<<<---By deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • History
  • Prefetch
  • Java Cache
• Click the [Empty Selected] button.
