I have a dumb question. Where is the option to view as thumbnail? My pictures folder is set with detail option and I have to manually change view to thumbnail.

I prefer all my others folders in detail view. I looked in tools folder options, within picture folder, but I must be blind because I can't find the option to view as thumbnail.

    Thanks.

Try raising the number of folder settings that XP can remember. The default value is 400 and that was not nearly enough for most users.

You can either edit the Registry or use TweakUI to do it for you.

In TweakUI, you'll find the setting listed under Explorer > Customizations. Set it to 8000.

    TweakUI

If TweakUI doesn't work in your situation, it will likely be due to some corruption in the Registry regarding this area. In that case get this Kelly Theriot file. Download and double-click that and allow it to clean up the Registry for previous folder settings made by you and also bump the value up to 8000. You will lose any previous settings with this method but it's the only way to get the corruption cleaned up. You'll soon get your favorite folders reset manually and now the setting should "stick. "

I already have it set to 8000. Is there not an option in folder options for
setting it to detailed or thumbnail? I thought there was. I must have imagined it. I can't get it to stick because I can't find the option to choose detailed or thumbnail.

If you open the folder and click on View and Thumbnails is not listed there, try this Restore XP Thumbnails File.

Run that and select all of the file type you would like Thumbnails for and click Apply. If the ones you want are already tagged, untag them and click apply. Then tag them back and click apply again.

BTW, did you run the Kelly Theriot file? I recommend that you do so.

If you are still having problems after checking and doing all those items, go to Start > Run and type regsvr32 /i shell32 and press enter. You should get a confirmation message about installing and registering the shell32.dll file.

Also, in the folder options window on the view tab, make sure the line that says "Remember each folder's view settings" is checked.

That was needed prior to SP2. In SP2 the default value has been raised to 5000 (2,500 local & 2,500 network folders).

I do have "Remember each folder's view settings" checked off already.
I do have an option to view as thumbnail under view. I think I've figured it out. When I open my picture folder everything is viewed as thumbnail, except
new folders added within my picture folder. Once I open the new folders and select view as thumbnail, they keep that setting.

So...maybe you never really had a problem in the first place. In any event, we still have to send you a bill. :D

    All the best.
