    Hi,
I have an older version of WindowsXP with Sp1 I want to use on a computer I am refurbing. I remember running into this before, but I forgot...
After installing, activating, and registering, all I can get at the MS Update site are updates for SP1. I ordered the CD, but looking at a month to receive. There is a link for downloading SP1 for IT Pro's., but recommended to download the smaller vs. at MS update-which I cannot find. Does this have to do with end support for SP1? Can someone direct me to a link-seems I found it a year ago. Also, do you need to download updates for SP1 before getting to SP2, or can you just install SP2 after installing WinXP SP1, then do updates for SP2?

When using Windows Update have you tried clicking the custom button? I would think (though I can't say for sure) that SP2 would be listed under priority updates. If you can't find it there, you can download the complete service pack here.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

SP2 will include all updates that were released for SP1 up until the time SP2 was released so you shouldn't have to install any updates first. You'll have to pay a visit to Windows Update after installing SP2 though in order to get all of the updates that have been released since SP2 was released.

If you download the complete service pack you might think about burning it to a CD. That way, you'll have it on hand if you ever have to do this again.

    Zander,
Yes, I use the Custom option, but SP2 doesnot seem to show up as an option. The link you gave is the one I mentioned for IT Pro's-it seems to indicate there is more stuff in it, but maybe thats what I will need to use.

OK, I just ran the custom method for updates again, and it did give me the option for SP2-seems like the first time it just gave me a zillion options for SP1-I would not think you need to install all these before SP2 is suggested.

I successfully downloaded SP2 from MS update. However, does anyone know if there is a place on the MS website where I can download the Setup file for SP2 and save it for a later install, rather than the automatic install Update does-(OTHER than the file for IT and Developers?)Update does not give you the option to save for later install. The IT vs. does.

That's the same link Zander posted, however Milt wanted a site other than that one.

I don't know what the confusion here is:

1.) I wanted a download link from Micrsoft (not a 3rd party) site, where I could get SP2, and save it for a later install. If you go through Windows Update, that is not an option as far as I can tell-it is installed automatically.
2.) I appreciate the link from Hawk22, but I was looking for something from the Microsoft site.
3.) The link that keeps getting posted here, is for a Setup file that can be installed at a later time, but the instructions say it is for IT and Developers, so it probably is a different file than the one for one computer, which you get from Windows Update. Maybe it is the same-I don't know.
4.) Ounce I get the CD, it will resolve all this-but until then, I may need to reinstall the OS several times until I get this Puter refurbished-that is why I wanted the independent file to save and install. Ounce I get everything configured, I will either Sliptream, or make an image of the OS with SP2.

In reality, the link Zander posted, the link that hawk22 posted, and the two links (both are the same target) that visionof posted ALL go to the same site eventually. It's the MS download site. That's was the point of my previous post that contained a statement from MS to that effect.

The file you get is intended for IT Professionals and Developers (as you have seen) but it's the only way you'll get SP2 from what I could ever find out. I used it "way back when" and it worked fine. It's just a bit larger of a download than needed for a single specific system. It's able to cover all versions of XP.

If you want the system specific version, you'll not get it as a download, just as a self executing install from the Updater site.

    More background ....

AFAIK the SP2 download from Windows Update first checks out your current instalation, determines it it is XP Home or Pro and then downloads and installs just what is necessary.

The full download from the URL posted - ' IT Professionals and Developers' is simply the whole package. Whatever is needed is installed. My guess is that that is exactly what you get on the MS CD :)

    OK,
Thanks PeteC and Surferdude (& others)-I think we have clarity on this.
