When I first turn on the computer, my keyboard doesn't do anything (Type). I have to go to Control Panel and click on Keyboard, then OK to type. What must I do?

    Hey Molehill?
This one had me thinking for a while this morning.
When you do a ctrl/alt/del...what all do you have listed in that dialogue box?

    Don't worry about it Molehill.
If you've got your keyboard back and functioning right, that's all that matters. :)

Well, my keyboard still isn't ready when I first need it. Maybe the trouble is that when I first installed Windows XP, I was using a different keyboard. Since hooking it back up to this keyboard, I have go to the control panel, click on "Keyboard ", and then "OK ".
It is then ready. What must I do so I don't have to do that?

When you first start up (with the kbd not working) how does it show up in device manager? Normal, busted, unknown?

Does the same thing happen with another keyboard or just with the one?

    Expanding on Newt's post...

When in Device Manager - expand the "Keyboards" listing, then on the top, select "VIEW" and choose "show hidden devices ".

Un-install each - then have windows search for hardware changes. - The current KYB should be detected and installed.

In device manager, it says for keyboard: PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 keyboard (101/102-key)
But when I am on my Windows98 HD, it says: Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft natural keyboard. Now, please tell me how to "Uninstall" the keyboard. Yes, I am that ignorant. :) I had to ask someone how to get to Device Manager.
    Thanks for your help.

Molehill - not unusual to have different operating systems identify a kbd differently. I think the one you have for XP is correct if you have a standard keyboard.

And "uninstall" isn't an option for the active keyboard on my system. It is for many of the hardware devices but not the keyboard. Might be there if you had multiple listings and could remove the ones you weren't running. Not sure.

You never did say if another keyboard works properly.

As far as I know, this did not happen with the installer's keyboard.
And this same keyboard doesn't act this way with the Windows98 HD. This is something I can live with though.
My rememberer forgets that I have to "start" the keyboard. :)
Thanks for your input and help with this.

You might check for updated keyboard drivers for your particular one and XP.
