Hi there! I keep getting the following error on my computer when I open up some -- but not all -- pages in IE 6.0:

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in
    module MSVCRT.DLL at 0187:780154a7.

Through some research, I've found that the solution could be the MS Libraries Update, which of course MS doesn't have on its site anymore for 98 SE. So, I found the update through a Google search and downloaded and ran the file entitle "SPEU." However, the error still exists.

Can anyone out there help an old gal with this? Can't afford to purchase a new system at this time! Thanks much...

It says Internet Explorer caused the fault. If you go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and find Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, highlight it and click the Add/Remove button. There you will see an option to repair Internet Explorer.

That file comes with Internet Explorer. Get the latest download of Internet Explorer and run that if the repair does not seem to work.

    Follow-up to mattman's suggestion & further question

mattman, thanks for the information. I tried your suggestion and got the following two message boxes:

"Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaired. Please run Setup again to reinstall all components."

"Internet Explorer 6 cannot be repaired due to the following errors: Version 3.0.8168.0 of ATL.DDL exists, but the version needs to be greater than 3.0.8449.0 "

Do you have any insight on this? Or should I reinstall IE6 or go to IE7? I hesitate to install IE7 for fear of crashing my computer...

    All thoughts are welcome!

It seems like you have a mixture of file versions.

I think you will find Internet Explorer 7.0 will not install on Windows 98.

The latest release for 98 seems to be IE 6.0 Service Pack 1.

You should download this and install it.

Check the basics, go to Control Panel -> Internet Options, delete the temporary files and cookies. Reduce the size of the temporary files folder down to about 50Mb. Do a Disk Cleanup.

Of course you will know that 98 is no longer supported. You will need to be your own security administrator, having good antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc., and there will still be security worries with Windows itself. Personally, my Win 98 is no longer connected to the internet so that I don't need to maintain it.

It may be possible that another (MS) program has installed an old version of those files. MSVCRT.DLL is also part of MS Office and MS Visual Studio. I would concentrate on reinstalling Internet Explorer.

Matt, thanks again. I kind of thought that's what I might need to do.

I do have one other (probably) silly question about installation:

Do I need to uninstall IE6 then reinstall the new IE6 download, or will the IE6 software automatically overwrite the old IE6 software? Please let me know!

    update to last post

Matt an update -- I figured out the reinstall (there was an overwrite command, as I'm sure you're aware) and did that for just the IE6 components.

Unfortunately, the original error message is still popping up on select sites. I guess I'll just have to live with it unless...

Should I reinstall, say MS Visual Studio as well? (I actually don't know if I have that installed to begin with.) Again, your thoughts are welcome!

You got the reinstall to work

The installing/reinstalling problems have been overcome (we hope :)).

We still have the MSVCRT.DLL problem :(

    Two avenues I would suggest:
Update programs that are related to some scripts that are run on some websites. The most important is Java
    www.java.com
Another I can think of is flashplayer:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

Get one or two other browsers. I like Firefox, it offers tabs and popup blockers for Win 98. Another I have as a fall-back is Opera. MS is no longer supporting their browser for Win 98.

Hi again! I installed Java, and still have the MSVCRT.DLL error. On a much brighter note, however, I don't get the error message on websites when using the Firefox browser. Thanks for that suggestion.

One last exceptionally silly question -- I by accident hit "hide icon" for the Java icon on my startup panel. Any idea how to get the icon un-hidden?

    Thanks,

If things are working well, I would not bother. As an end-user you probably won't need it [I have never used it :D ] For end-users, Java works in the background.

Java has background programs like an updater, so if you think some settings may need to be adjusted look in Start -> Programs for a Java listing, also look in Control Panel for the Java icon (sorry, I am a little confused by "startup panel "). Without booting up my current install of Win 98, I am not sure I have the Java program installed (but I have not "manipulated" it anyway :D ).

Thanks again Matt...I think all is good to go now, as long as I continue using the Firefox browser.

peb1130: If you want the Java icon in the system tray, go to Control Panel>Java, click on the Advanced tab, click on the + next to Miscellaneous and check the box next to "Place Java icon in system tray "

peb1130, Hi, I had a similar occurrence some time back and found this in BBS.
Boot with 98 floppy, choosing CD-ROM support, watch the screen for the drive letter for the CD. When you see the A:>\ do these commands. Substitute the drive letter for the CD for the X below.
    c:
    cd\windows\system
    extract /y X:\win98\win98_63.cab msvrct.dll
    Take out floppy and reboot.
This msvrct.dll is the one that came with 98SE. It has been updated since then. When windows is running, go to this page and download Vbrun60SP5.Exe, install it and the file will be updated.
    If you do need to get Explorer.Exe [and it won't hurt], this is what you need to do before removing the floppy and rebooting;
    cd\windows
    extract /y X:\win98\win98_45.cab explorer.exe
Hope this helps and good luck.

BTW, I believe this occurred when you uninstalled Office, and you got the prompt about this being a shared file, and the system indicates it is no longer in use, and asks if you no longer needed it.
Ihope this is the answer as it worked for me. Neil lol :)
Maybe Matt can confirm this is helpful??

Hi retiredlearner, I think extracting a copy of the original msvrct.dll could be worthwhile if peb1130 was intent on getting Internet Explorer working 100% again. I just wonder if the change in file versions may lead to a further problem (the original may be the file for version 4.0 of IE). If I tried, I would back up the current MSVCRT.DLL by renaming it (say msvcrt.bak) so that it could be replaced if the extracted file was no better.

If it was me, I would use Firefox and only use IE on occasions that warranted it (visiting the Microsoft website and some other sites that work on IE, like Dell).

!Be careful about extracting Explorer.exe. That is Explorer.exe, the program that runs the main file system for Windows (Windows Explorer), it is not Iexplore.exe, the Internet Explorer program!

    peb1130, did you see this:
    http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/ermsvcrt.htm
The Internet Explorer section talks about removing Yahoo Companion.
