I bought a used Mitac 7521P notebook and I'm now trying to install XP, but it refuses to boot from CD at startup.
I get an error "Missing operating system ". I've tried the 6-disk XP boot and Windows 98 boot disk (with CDROM driver), with both, the computer detects the CD ROM drive, but it won't install.
With the XP 6-disk boot, after the system has booted from all 6 disks, the XP CD has to be inserted, but after I do so, I get an error saying something like "The CD is broken or corrupt ", and I've tried 2 different CD's and both of them are brand new.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I hope someone understood something of this mess of a post.

Have you checked the boot order in BIOS? It is possible that it is not configured to boot from the CD at all. It should be set to either Floppy > CD-ROM > HDD or CD-ROM > Floppy > HDD.

There may be a problem with the drive - I assume the notebook has an OS installed, so can the drive read other CD's?

The boot order is OK. The hard drive is blank and the CD drive does read other CD's. For instance, it will automatically boot with the 7521P's driver CD.

The discs are OEM, but they've worked before on many computers without a hitch. I have 192MB RAM, and I'm in the process of getting more. If I manage to get it to install.

    Boot order

Can you change the boot order to boot off the cd ?
Is it a bootable cd ?
I had one laptop where it would not install off a standard install disc
You need the recovery disk and then you upgraded to it
There was a workaround I was told of - I can ask if you can not install

Try installing windows 98 or 2000 and then doing an upgrade
