    Hello everyone

earlier today we had a power cut in the house and i was on my computer at the time.
Obviously the computer switched off and then, as the cut lasted about half a second, restarted but gave me the usual options of safe mode start normally etc when you dont shut down properly. anyhow i started normally and it got to the windows loading screen then after a few seconds a blue screen flicks on with loads of code etc then it restarts the computer

and the blue screen comes and goes to quick to see what it says.

ive tried booting in safe mode and same thing happens, and same thing happens when i try boot from restore.

any help would be appreciated since im not the greatest at fixing computers.

    pac1984 - Welcome to the Board :)

Your situation does not sound too good :( - I suspect that the power surge when the power came back on has fried some component or other - possibly the PSU, maybe something more serious. Almost impossible to say, but I would back a hardware failure.

It is possible that the heads in the hard drive crashed into the platters if the computer was writing to the disk when the power went off. I suggest you download the hard drive diagnostics from the drive manufacturer and run them if you can.

Hi, pac1984. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

I suggest you consider purchasing a battery backup (UPS) to help ward off this unfortunate situation in the future.

Battery backups also often have automatic shutdown software included on CD which will gracefully shut down the computer if the power stays off and no one is present to shut down manually.

Most computer stores/departments (such as Best Buy) have a selection of UPS units available.

I don't think anyone has mentioned chkdsk. Run Error Checking (chkdsk) on that drive.

Hi Pete, as far as I know, manufacturer's utilities cannot make any adjustments to the file system (crazy file names might suggest a file system problem). They could check the file system (?), but I would be certain that they could not make adjustments to it, only the Windows file checking system can do that. I have found that any problems regarding the file system are referred back to the OS checking/repair system.

Another possibility (?)...if there were any backups made of the MBR for that drive they could possibly be restored. Antiviruses can often make backups of the MBR and also the drive manufacturer's utilities (but, of course, they needed to have been run at some stage in the past).

I have not seen "garbled" file names before, but maybe this helps.

    Matt
