I work third shift and like to listen to talk radio to stay alert. Unfortunately, due to some local programing changes, there is currently nothing I care to listen to. I discovered that my favorite talk radio station has replays of recent daytime shows that I like available by going to their website. I'm driving for most of my shift and have a laptop mounted in the car I drive. I can go to their site and select files to listen to, which are played through Media Player. The problem I have is that the volume isn't loud enough, especially if I open my car windows. I made sure the Windows volume control slider is at the maximum and also the same with Media Player. I'm looking for any suggestions to use any other method to increase the volume. I thought about getting a little computer speaker and plugging it into the speaker port. Unfortunately, the laptop is in a mount and the docking connection is in the back of the laptop. The speaker port is also in the back of the laptop and is blocked by the mount. The laptop is a Panasonic Toughbook CF-28. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Many laptops have a volume control on the side of the machine.

Is their a chance you could modify the mount, example drill a hole large enough to allow a plug to properly seat to the port/jack. If you also have clearance problems, may need a patch cord with a 90 degree plug. If you do get external speaker(s), be sure they are self-powered (to amplify the signal). Headphones would be a option when on site, but not while your driving (against the law in many states).
My Volkswagon has a factory installed 8 speaker sound system with "audio in" jack on the front panel of the radio. Have a portable DVD player with double screens for the kids. I run a patch cord from the player audio out to this port. Using the volume control on my radio I can adjust the volume to values that could knock down low flying aircraft. ;) :D

    Hi Dennis,

If it is in Bucksone's State, an earbud in one ear wouldn't be - same as hands free cell use.

    Regards - Charles

Unfortunately, the laptop and the mount belong to my employer, which means drilling holes, etc. would not be acceptable.

The back of the laptop has a cover that is pretty much the whole length of the back of it. To access the speaker port, this entire cover needs to be open, which isn't possible because the mount blocks the entire length of the back of the laptop.

I can check tonight to see if this laptophas a volume control on the side, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

I realize that I'm making this difficult, since I am very limited regarding making any physical alterations to the laptop, since it doesn't belong to me. Perhaps there is some software application that could be used to boost the sound?

Personal Sound Amplifier and some more (down one page). A variety of choices to amplify local environment. Some come with ear buds, (use one bud) which will keep you street legal while cruising down road, use both when on site.
