Please help! Windows Media Player 10 is suddenly refusing to play any files - not even Audio CDs. The error message is "WMP cannot play the file. This player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Also, all sounds have gone (the tunes that usually play when booting up or logging off, "Welcome to AOL," "You have e-mail" etc.) and on the Sounds tab in Control Panel, the entire list of sounds (chimes, chord etc) is unplayable because the Play button is greyed out. My sound card is OK because I can still listen to radio and use Real Player. I've gone through all the standard troubleshooting procedures, and even re-installed WMP10, but the problem remains. Can anyone please suggest any possible remedies - in simple, step-by-step language please! Thanks, Bob.

Have you tried to re-install your sound card drivers?

BobGinger - Welcome to the Board :)
Have you checked in Device Manager for flagged items under audio?

You should also check out your Directx .....

Start > Run > type in dxdiag > OK - a multi-tabbed diagnostic window will open - work through doing all the tests.
