Windows Vista IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSODs, Logs included

Hello everyone,

Lately I keep getting some really annoying BSODs, and after walking though the usual Virus/Spyware/Memtest/HDD/Temerature checkups with no result, I decided it might be better to let the real pros have a look at it....so here goes:

The system itself is barely 2 weeks old and consists of:
AMD Athlon 64 5600 X2 CPU
2 GB DDR800 RAM from Crucial in 5.5.5-15 timings
Abit AN9 32X Fatality (nForce 590 SLI), newest BIOS
XFX 8800 GTX Videocard
2x 320 GB Western Digital SATA2 HDD
Plextor 716A DVD Burner
LG DVD Drive
Tagan 600W Power Supply
Windows Vista Business, all updates installed.
No overclocking or other stuff done that could harm system stability.

I ran Memtest over night and checked all Voltages and Temperatures, everything in the green area.

What keeps me guessing is the waol.exe noted in the log, we all know how "rock solid" their stuff is...on Vista startup, it always loads several files into the RAM and stays in the Taskbar regardless if I use it or not.
I removed it from Autostarting and will not use and load it for now, looking if that maybe already fixes it.
But thats just my guessing...

I would start by looking for Vista updates for the AOL program.

Yeah I have checked for updates for the AOL Suite and found out that I am currently using the most up to date Version of it.
I will try to get in touch with their tech support and give them a holla about it.

 

Sorry to state the obvious, which I see now is why you highlighted it .

Have you updated your main drivers? I have an Abit A9N-SLI and although the drivers Vista installed worked, the graphics did not seem to be 100% and there was no sound. (Maybe your system came supplied with Vista drivers, mine didn't)

I suggest you get the chipset drivers from Abit. Look on the XFX website for Vista drivers, otherwise get them from nVidia. Get Vista audio drivers from Realtek.

Maybe after updating those, AOL may be able to function a little better.

Yes, I always download the very latest certified drivers and burn them on a CDRW before building a new system, same case here.
The CDs coming with the products usually contain old and outdated stuff.

I believe its just more or less sloppy coding on AOLs side, their clients were never known to be robust anyway.

AOL? What does it interact with? It seems to be requesting the loading of drivers?

If you are stuck, try booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling AOL. Check if there are any updates for the installation program before installing it again. If there are no "Vista" installations, try running the installation in compatibility mode or running it as administrator.

Yeah, they released a refresh of their Vista Ready 9.0 suite which I installed immediately, works okay so far...hopely it fixed the issues.

A lot, on startup it loads like 3-4 files into RAM of which 2 are taskbar processes and 2 are services running the the background.
It also does something with the network and such, so it kinda digs deeper into the system than you would usually expect which of course makes it an easy victim for causing BSODs if its not coded and tested well enough.

I just ran into another BSOD, this time it happened after I logged into Windows right after Bootup was complete.

Both those dumps are pointing to a hardware problem.

As Memtest isn't perfect, try running with just one stick of RAM. If it still crashes, or after a period of time where it doesn't crash then run the other stick by itself.

 

It looks like I have found the problem and solved it.
Sounds kinda ridiculous...but the ram was running with Voltage too LOW the whole time.

Its Crucial Ballistix RAM and specced to run at 2.0-2.2 Volts with 4-4-4-12 timings, my Mainboard for whatever reason always fed it 1.8 Volts only.
I wondered from the start why it locked up on these timings so I set the BIOS to "by SPD" settings and it used 5-5-5-15 (which is there for compatiblity reasons only).
Looks like it was enough for the (already too high) 5-5-5-15 Timings in most cases, but sometimes still led to a blackout charging a BSOD.

So now, I upped the voltage to 2.0 Volts, set the 4-4-4-12 timings and just got done with playing over an hour of Stalker, which is one of the most hardware demanding games available to date.
Ill do some more testing the next few days but I am pretty confident that this was the achilles heel.
Never thought id run into an unstable system because its UNDERvolted.

 

Hey, well done Soundwave. From my understanding, RAM and CPU voltages work the opposite to what you might expect. If you want to push it harder, lower the voltage and visa versa. Do some investigation at the overclocker's websites if you are interested.

Thats exactly what I thought too Matt.
However...the way it looks like these Modules (which use Micron Chips) belong to those that actually require quite some juice to work properly, the Micron PDF Datasheet even recommends running them at 2.1 or 2.2 Volts as default voltage.

Ill keep you informed how things will work out.

If you want to ease off on the "speed ", increase the voltage.

I think you will find it works the opposite way to what you might expect. Giving it "juice" (increasing the voltage) will be more failsafe.

Edit: History...voltages for RAM and CPU are coming down, voltages for older hardware used to be a lot higher than they are now.

 

Oh I understood you perfectly Matt.
The "problem" with these 2 sticks of RAM is though, that they actually require higher voltage to operate overall and in overclocked speeds.

DDR2 normal voltage is 1.8 Volts, these sticks are supposed to be running at 2.0-2.2 by default, if you want to overclock them, (they are specced for DDR 1000 maximum) the magazines doing so upped voltages up to whopping 2.4 Volts to get them stable.

So as you can see, there in some cases are still exceptions to the general trend hardware is following.
As for me, I am just happy they run stable and well in DDR800.
