Hey all, thanks for reading.. To give some background information, the computer is a Vaio PCV-RX850 with XP, slipstreamed SP2, nothing special or custom, everything is OEM.

When I first got it I zeroed the drive and installed XP. It wouldn't recognize USB devices. For example, plug in a Microsoft Intellimouse, and it would say: Windows cannot install the device. The wizard could not install the hardware because the necsessary software could not be found.

Of course, if you point the wizard to C:\Windows\Inf, it will locate the drivers. But if you plug the device into a different USB port, you have to go through all of that again.

Someone suggested I try combining SP2 and my windows CD, so I did that and reinstalled... Same problem. I've also made sure in each case to install current chipset drivers, and also tried deleting all the USB root hub and reinstalling... Nothing changes.

It does this for any USB device. Camera, ipod, mouse, phone, anything. Only USB though, other devices work fine. Current on all motherboard drivers, service packs, etc. Installed updated USB hub drivers etc.

Anyway, thanks for reading this far. If you have any ideas or questions let me know.

    -Matt

Wellllllllllllll figured it out... In device manager, for the SiS PCI USB host controller whatever thing, I changed the driver to the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" Now it works fine! Hope this helps someone else. BTW This is with the SiS 7001 chipset

Hi, SpyraTex. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

Thank you for including good details in your thread topic and message contents. Your follow-up message about your fix is greatly appreciated too. Let's hope someone with the same or similar problem runs across your thread and solves their problem just as easily. :)

    Thanks again and good luck!

EDIT: BTW, in case anyone ever needs help finding Windows XP's Device Manager, it can be quickly accessed by holding down the Windows key on the keyboard and pressing the Pause/Break key to pull up the "System Properties" window. The "Device Manager" button is located under the "Hardware" tab in the System Properties window.
