    Greetings !

I recieve this error message whenever I try to play a game, beeing this game the most simple or the most complicated $40 game. I play the game for a while and when I quit the computer restarts, reboots. I disabled the automatic restart, and the error logo for the problem was:

Driver IRQL not less or equal

    I need Help !
    Thanx in advance...

    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Hi Jim,followed that last question with great interest as I have that problem too!
I went to the article but on trying to follow the instructions struck a problem.
It said to go here:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Memory Management\PoolTagoverruns then change the value to 1,the problem is that I can't find it? Definitely not on my regedit list or I am looking in the wrong place!!
Could you or someone point me to the right place please??
    Many thanks in advance
    tric:confused:

I am not exactly an expert in this "IRQL not less or equal" field but I do have some experience with it.

Basically, the IRQL error can be caused by incompatible/bad drivers or devices. Since you say it happens when you're playing a game, it's most likely the video card. Second most likely culprit is the sound card. Third most likely culprit is pretty much anything else. ;)

In the "not less or equal" error message, look for a reference to a driver. If there is one, that'll give you a clue as to which driver or device is causing your problems.

If there is no clue in the error message, then the first troubleshooting method to try is to install the latest drivers for your video card. If you still get the error (install drivers, reboot, play one of the games that creates the problem) then try updating the drivers for your sound card.

If it's an Nvidia video card, you might end up trying a number of drivers before you find one that plays well with your particular system.

Nvidia drivers can be found Here .

If different drivers don't solve the problem then it might be a defective piece of hardware. The best way to troubleshoot that is to start swapping out cards, replacing the ones you have with ones you know work...not always possible unless either you or your friends have extra hardware lying around you can use. :)

    Good luck!

Thanx Miz... It's not that I know that much about computers but I also thought my video card (Nvidia) was creating the problem. Yesterday I updated it, the rebooting keeps happening.

Although it's the sound card which most likely is the responsible. Why ?! Because anytime I updated it with Win Update, my sound card stopped responding. The computer wasn't recognizing it anymore, the hardware was acting as if it wasn't there. So i had to restore my comp to a previous point anytime I attemted to update my sound software.

Your explanation is very clear, thanx, although I don't have a spare sound card around, so I'm clueless what to do with it. Anytime I update it, it gets worse. What if I try playing the game on mute or sth ? Does it make a difference ?

    Thanx a lot !

Ahhh....you believed Microsoft when it said you really should get updated drivers, didn't you? I'm confident everybody's made that mistake at least once.

Not to worry, there are a few things you can try. They'll be tedious but try to think of it as a Real Fun Experience.

Disclaimer #1: I don't know how much you know so if I include information you don't need, just ignore it.

Disclaimer #2: Manually create a restore point before entering into the following quest.

Disclaimer #3: There are any number of ways to get into Device Manager. I have included the one I use. Feel free to use the approach of your choice. It never sees you coming no matter from which direction you mount your attack so it makes no difference.

    1. Download the drivers for your sound card from the web site of either the manufacturer your computer or the manufacturer of your sound card (recommended). Remember where you saved the file. Install the drivers according to the instructions you read before you downloaded the file. If you're like the rest of us, at this point you'll be returning to the site where you got the driver file to read the instructions just in case there's something weird required. Play your game. If the problem is still there, on to Step Two.

    2. Boot into Safe Mode. Go into Device Manager (right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager button) and expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" entry. Select your sound card, right click, and choose "Uninstall." Ignore the warning message about all the horrible things that will happen. Reboot and let Windows reinstall the card. (If it can't complete the install, tell it to give up and then follow the instructions for using the driver file you downloaded to complete the reinstall) Play your game. If the problem is still there, go to Step Four.

    4. It might be the video card after all, in which case you get to try Steps One and Two above on the video card.
