I hope I have posted to correct place. If not, I apologize. I upgraded Gateway Performance 650 computer with Windows 2000 and now I have no sound from my speakers. All the lights are on the speakers, cables are secure, I downloaded updated driver for Sound Blaster, checked to make sure nothing says MUTE, but still no sound. Any other ideas?

If your speakers work just before the upgrade, then I'm sure they are still working.
Try going into the device manager and removing the sound card drivers. Then reboot and let Win2k redetect them and load the proper drivers.

    Thanks,
You are so right. They are now working. Thanks for your assistance. Gateway would not help me at all since I did not purchase the new OS from them.

I have the same problem and tried the tip of removing the sound card in device manager. However, I still get no sound. It is a soundblaster live value card and looking up on the windows compatibility page I don't think it is compatible. Does that mean I have to get another card? If so, which one definitely works with win2000? This is very frustrating!

Thanks so much, S Smith; I already downloaded those filesdays ago and installed the first one (can't find my original soundblaster playcenter install CD) the second download you list says I don't have playcenter so it refuses to install. The first one installed great, I removed the card via device manager, etc. and all drivers are updated but still no sound.

Still very frustrated, would love to use w2000 but wihtout sound it's a big waste of money thus far!!!

Would anyone like to trade win2000 for a nice copy of ME or XP? Or maybe a new iMac with the floating display????

    Just about giving up...

    Deb,
Does the sound card show up in device manager and report working properly? If you go to control panel/sound speech and audio devices, is there some settings for your sound there?
Is it remotely possible your speakers are pluged in the wrong jack on the sound card?

whoops! you have Win2k... I was thinking XP sorry!
Is the speaker Icon in the systray? If you double click on it is anything muted? Just throwing ideas out there.
BTW I had XP in my head because Creative showed the same driver for XP and Win2k.

Nah, I know everything is OK because when I switch back to w98 everything is working great...in w2000 everything LOOKS great but still no sound. I think a new sound card is in store for me...

Sooo you don't think changing slots would help any? I really don't wanna be ******** around inside because w98 works great (a different hard drive, just switching cables around to get to w2000) albeit w98 *****...which is why I wanted w2000 so badly....

yeah see the sound card works great in win98 but not at all in w2000...plus overall w2000 is really pokey, much slower than w98, but I'm working that out in another post here in this group.

Thank gawd I mostly work on the Mac, it's my hubby who mostly works on the win side (we are side by side, me at my Mac and he at the win; my motto is it's better to have both Oss than only one and it has paid off handsomely "” Mac crashes much less often and win lets you get pages on the web and audio stuff that you can't get on the Mac side, and also vice-versa).

Thanks for all of your help! Hey if I can figure this out I'll send you all a gel candle (check out my web photo album at: http://www.netsnapshot.com/pcw/pickalbum?lovesalsa ) That is my first love, making candles!!

Thank you again! hoping this will eventually work!!

    IT'S WORKING!!! YAY YAY YAY!!!

Reinstalled everything....and am now listening to a live radio station! I cannot thank you all enough! Now I just gotta see if hubby likes it, seems a bit perkier, but the thing that was really grating on his nerves was the crashing of w98....w200 is supposedly less crash proof right?

OK ssmith and even you burley, pony up for a candle of your choice if you would like! Just email me! I believe in karma and besides, I may be whining to you guys/gals again over something else and what better than a nice reward system, eh?

By the way, Valentine's Day is coming up and why present your significant other with the same old-same old -- women LOVE these candles!!! Plus they smell GRRRRREAT!!!

Deb < - - love win2000 because it looks more like the Mac!! heh heh heh :D :D
