    Hi Guys (n' Gals),

I have a Dell GX280 Optiplex/2.8GHz/512MB/80GB/CDR drive that has WindowXP. Well something happened and it would not wake when pressed the button on the front. I finally had to pull the plug and restart.

That seemed Ok, I then went enter and print a couple work orders in the software I use (that runs on FoxPro I believe). When I went to print the first work order to the laser printer i get a window:

    Record Read:
    Selected:

......then finally got the "Program NTVDM.EXE not responding....." and kept getting that . So I tried to restart the computer.

Now I get the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error at boot and the machine won't boot at all, even in Safe Mode.

Does that message mean it can't read the Boot Block on the hard drive or something else? I have recovered many Mac hard drives but I am new to this on Windows.

What should my next step be? Re-install XP?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

I forgot to mention I believe this was XP with SP2. But I think XP may have downloaded the most recent "Update" from MicroSoft and somehow was trying to install it in the background.

    I also did find this:

I suggest you follow the steps outlined in the MS KB article you posted. The damaged files system scenario is more likely than the UDMA controller, but if all fails try the BIOS :)

Ok, I pressed F2 at Boot and made the CD drive the startup drive. After two attempts the machine boots off the Windows CD and I get to the Setup screen.....well I press "R" and nothing happens???????

Also pressing F3 to Exit or Enter to continue has no effect. One of the green LED's on the keyboard also goes out when I get to the Setup screen....??

Are you using a wireless keyboard?

No wireless, USB keyboard. I also have a Kensington USB trackball (instead of a mouse). I just tried unplugging the trackball and pressing the "R" and F3....still nothing happens. :(

I don't want to lead you up the garden path here, but it seems that the keyboard is disabled as soon as Setup starts - no USB support at that stage? Have you access to a PS/2 keyboard?

I think I have one somewhere. Will have to look. But if this is the Windows CD that came with this Dell and the Dell came with a USB keyboard whey would the Setup program not recognize USB? The firmware sees the USB keyboard when I press F2 at boot.....but not Setup? Does the Setup progam not use the firmware in the Dell to get keyboard input?

I agree, that is why I was sounding a note of caution, but the fact remains that the keyboard appears to be disabled. As you noted the LED also goes out. Give the PS/2 a try if you can.

By some miracle I found a (dusty) PS2 keyboard.....went to plug it in the Dell and guess what? No PS2 port can be found.

Just for kicks I plugged the USB keyboard into one of the USB ports on the front of the Dell. The green light on the keyboard still goes out when it gets to "loading Windows" but when I pressed R this time it worked (I saw "USB Hub Controller" during the load process....not sure why it just sees the front port)

So, I am now in the Recovery Consol with a "C:\>" prompt.

What do I type next? "chkdsk c: /r "? [with a space after the ":" and before the "/"]

    ?

    Thanks....

Hmm - dodgy USB port? Good Luck :)

Problem with modern computers - no PS/2 and rarely a floppy drive - a lifesaver on occasions.

Ok, looks like that fixed it. I suppose no way to verify my FoxPro files corrupted?

One more question though; a few months a ago a window would pop on the screen saying "Windows Defender Application failed to initialize 0x800106ba..... "

Can anyone explain to me what that means and how do I get it to stop saying that?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    Good news :)
I'm not familiar with FoxPro - do you suspect corruption? - do they fail to open?
Download the latest version of WD - that should fix it - I've come across that message before :)
